Yes, you can use a local account on Windows 11 Home—but Microsoft’s published setup requirement and its instructions for switching accounts apply at different stages. Microsoft says Windows 11 Home setup requires an internet connection and a Microsoft account. After setup, you can switch your sign-in to a local account in Settings.
Why Windows 11 Home account guidance seems contradictory
Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements say Windows 11 Home requires internet connectivity and a Microsoft account during initial device setup. Separately, Microsoft documents a Settings route to change an existing Microsoft-account sign-in to a local account.

Those statements describe different points in the process. The post-setup conversion instructions do not establish that a local account is available during initial setup. Microsoft’s published requirement concerns that initial setup stage; its conversion route applies after you have set up Windows and signed in.

| Consideration | Local account | Microsoft account |
|---|---|---|
| Where it applies | Created on and associated with one device. | Uses an email address and password across Microsoft services and devices. |
| Signing in without internet | Does not require internet connectivity to sign in, according to Microsoft Support’s account-switching documentation. | Internet is required during Windows 11 Home initial setup; the cited account-comparison material does not make a broader claim about every later sign-in situation. |
| Sync and service integration | Does not sync account settings and files across devices through a Microsoft account. | Microsoft says it can sync settings and files between devices and connect to its services. Its account-creation page lists 5 GB of cloud storage and free online versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; the page does not state a publication year. See Microsoft’s account-creation information. |
| Password recovery | Recovery options include security questions, another administrator account, or an optional reset disk. If no administrator account is available, resetting the device may be necessary. | The local-account reset-disk method described below is not available for Microsoft accounts. |
Microsoft recommends a Microsoft account, citing service integration, security, and sync benefits. A local account may fit someone who wants a sign-in tied to one device. The practical trade-off to weigh is that local-account password recovery can be less straightforward if you have not prepared recovery options.

- Follow the prompts to create a username and password, then finish signing out as directed. Microsoft says the username must be different from other usernames on the device.
Microsoft documents this route in its account-switching instructions. Settings labels can vary with configuration or future Windows updates.

- Password reset disk: Create one on a USB flash drive while signed in to the local account. Microsoft’s reset-disk instructions say to remove the USB drive afterward and store it safely. This option is for local accounts, not Microsoft accounts.
If you cannot use a recovery method and no administrator account is available, Microsoft says you may need to reset the device. Its guidance for resetting or changing a local password is available in Change or reset your local account password in Windows.
Windows Hello is a separate sign-in choice
