Use Sleep for a short break and a quick return, Hibernate when you’ll be away longer and want to conserve more power, and Fast Startup when you want Windows to shut down and boot faster without keeping your open user session. Fast Startup is not the same as Hibernate: it logs off your account and saves Windows’ kernel state for the next startup.
How Sleep, Hibernate, and Fast Startup differ
| Option | What Windows saves | Power while away | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sleep | Your work and open session | Uses very little power; the PC may turn off if its battery gets too low | A short break when you want to resume quickly |
| Hibernate | Your work and open session, written to storage | Uses less power than Sleep | A longer time away, especially when a laptop or tablet won’t be charged |
| Fast Startup | Windows’ kernel state, not your open user session | The PC shuts down | A shutdown followed by a faster startup |
Microsoft describes Sleep as resuming faster than Hibernate, while Hibernate takes longer to resume because Windows saves the session to storage. Actual power use and return times vary by device and settings; Microsoft does not provide a universal battery-drain figure or startup-time benchmark. Microsoft’s Sleep and Hibernate guidance

Which option should you use?
Choose Sleep for a brief absence
Sleep is the convenient choice when you expect to return soon and want your open work ready quickly. It uses a small amount of power, so it is less suitable than Hibernate for an extended period away from a charger.
Choose Hibernate for a longer break away from power
Hibernate preserves your open session on storage and uses less power than Sleep. It is useful for a laptop or tablet that will be unused for an extended period without a charging opportunity. Resuming takes longer, and Hibernate is not available on every PC.

Choose Fast Startup when you want to shut down
Fast Startup is a shutdown path that saves kernel state to a hibernation file so Windows can start faster next time. Windows logs off user sessions first, so your open apps and account session are not restored as they are with Hibernate. Microsoft Learn: System power states
How Fast Startup differs from Restart
Fast Startup applies to shutdown and the following startup. Microsoft documents Restart as a full boot cycle, rather than the hibernation-file shutdown path used by Fast Startup. If you need Windows to start afresh, choose Restart rather than shutting down and powering on with Fast Startup enabled. Microsoft Learn: System power states
