If Windows 11 shows a grey or blank screen after an update, start with the graphics reset shortcut: press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. If the display stays blank, use the cursor, sign-in screen, or any error message to choose the least disruptive next step below. Microsoft lists incompatible drivers and incomplete updates as possible causes, but the screen color alone cannot identify the cause.
First, identify what the screen is showing
Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting guide covers symptoms that readers may describe as grey, black, or blank. Before changing anything, note what you can see:

- Blank or grey screen, no error: Try the graphics reset shortcut first.
- Blank screen with a cursor: Try restarting Windows Explorer after the shortcut.
- Sign-in screen appears: Sign in if possible, then use the driver or update steps below.
- A stop code or error message appears: Follow Microsoft’s separate stop-code guidance; the blank-screen steps below may not apply.
Also note whether the issue began immediately after a Windows update or a display-driver update. That timing can help you choose a recovery step, but does not prove which update caused the problem. The available Microsoft guidance does not tie this symptom to a specific Windows 11 release or update number.
Try the least disruptive fixes first
1. Reset the graphics driver
Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. Microsoft documents this shortcut as a way to reset the graphics driver in some blank-screen situations. The display may flicker or you may hear a sound. If the screen does not return, move to the next step that matches what you can see.

2. Restart Windows Explorer if there is a cursor
This step is for a blank screen where the mouse cursor is visible. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. If Windows Explorer appears in the process list, select it and choose Restart. If it is not listed, choose File > Run new task, enter explorer.exe, and select OK.
If Windows is still blank, use Safe Mode to check the display driver
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. If you cannot navigate Windows normally, use Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) to reach Startup Settings. Microsoft’s blank-screen guide describes forcing shutdown by holding the power button, then repeating the start-and-shutdown process two or three times until the Recovery Mode screen appears. This interrupts normal startup; use it only when Windows will not start normally.
- At the Windows RE screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the device restarts and displays the Startup Settings list, press F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
- In Safe Mode, open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
- Open the display adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart the device normally and check whether the display returns.
Rollback is useful when the problem began after a driver change, but the button may be unavailable if Windows has no earlier driver to restore.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRemove a recent Windows update only when the timing fits
If the blank screen started right after a Windows update, removing a recent update is another option. Microsoft warns that removing security updates has risks, and some updates cannot be uninstalled. This step is not a guaranteed fix.

If you can use Settings
Go to Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, then select an update to remove if Windows offers that option.
If Windows will not start normally
In Windows RE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates and follow the available choices. Microsoft provides details in its Windows recovery options guide. Consider the security implications before removing a security update.

If the shortcut, Explorer restart, driver rollback, and relevant update removal do not help, Windows RE includes System Restore and other recovery choices. Choose the least disruptive option that fits your situation. Some recovery actions can remove apps, settings, or personal files; reinstalling Windows from installation media can remove everything, so it is not an early troubleshooting step. Review Microsoft’s recovery options and their effects before proceeding.
When these steps do not resolve the screen
If Windows continues to show a blank display after the applicable software recovery steps, the available guidance does not establish whether the cause is the display hardware, a specific graphics card, or a particular driver version. Record the device model, display adapter, driver version, and the update history around the time the issue began. If an error or stop code appears, use its dedicated troubleshooting path rather than assuming this is an ordinary blank-screen problem.
