The Windows setting most likely meant by “hidden GPU mode” is Optimizations for windowed games. It is designed for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games played in windowed or borderless windowed mode; it is not a universal frame-rate switch. Microsoft says it can reduce frame latency by changing how those games are presented, but any improvement in smoothness depends on the game and PC.
What Windows setting is likely behind the smoother gameplay?
The title’s “GPU mode” wording is ambiguous. The best-supported match is Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games, a graphics setting for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless windowed mode. Microsoft says it improves performance in that scope and reduces frame latency by moving compatible games from the legacy blt presentation model to the newer flip model. Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance also says the change can enable features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays.

That describes the intended behavior, not a guaranteed increase in frames per second. The result in an individual game may be more noticeable as reduced latency or steadier-feeling presentation—or may be difficult to notice. The setting’s documented scope does not establish a benefit for every game, graphics API, or fullscreen mode.
How to turn on the windowed-game optimization
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics in Windows 11.
- Under Default settings, turn on Optimizations for windowed games.
- Close and restart the game so it runs with the changed setting.
If Auto HDR is enabled, Microsoft says it turns this optimization on automatically. To switch the optimization off globally, turn off Auto HDR first if it is enabled, then turn off the windowed-game optimization.

Change the setting for one game
- Go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Under Custom options for apps, select the game and choose Options. If the game is not listed, add it to the app list.
- Switch off Optimizations for windowed games, save the change, and restart that game.
A per-game override is useful if the global setting helps most of your games but causes a problem in one. Change one option at a time and compare the same game and display mode before and after.
How it differs from HAGS and Fullscreen Optimizations
Windows has several graphics features that can be described casually as a GPU or fullscreen mode. They do different jobs, so their names and effects should not be treated as interchangeable.

| Fullscreen Optimizations | How supported fullscreen-exclusive games are presented behind the scenes | Supported fullscreen-exclusive games; not the same as the Windows 11 toggle for windowed games | Microsoft describes an optimized borderless presentation intended to retain fullscreen-like performance while supporting conveniences such as faster Alt-Tab and overlays. Should you enable HAGS instead?
HAGS is a separate optional setting, not another name for Optimizations for windowed games. In Microsoft’s June 30, 2020 explanation, Partner Development Lead Steve Pronovost wrote: “With the right hardware and drivers, Windows can now offload most of GPU scheduling to a dedicated GPU-based scheduling processor.” Microsoft’s explanation is about reducing scheduling overhead; it does not promise better frame rates or smoother play for every system. Because HAGS is available only when the hardware and drivers support it, its presence and behavior can vary by PC.
If the game you are troubleshooting is DirectX 10 or 11 and you play it windowed or borderless, the windowed-game optimization is the more directly relevant option to try. If you are considering HAGS, treat it as a separate system-level experiment: note its current state, change only that setting, restart as needed, and compare the same game under the same conditions. Restore the previous state if the result is worse or unstable.

What to check if the setting makes no difference
- Confirm the game fits the documented scope. The explicit coverage is DirectX 10 or 11 in windowed or borderless windowed mode. The guidance does not promise an effect for other APIs or fullscreen play.
- Restart the game after changing the option. The app must be relaunched to test the changed behavior.
- Check whether Auto HDR is controlling the global setting. Microsoft says enabling Auto HDR also enables Optimizations for windowed games.
- Compare consistently. Use the same game, scene, display mode, and graphics settings when judging whether the change helps; a smoother impression alone does not establish a measured FPS gain.
- Use the per-game override to isolate a problem. If one title behaves worse, disable the optimization for that game rather than changing unrelated graphics settings.
Microsoft’s public guidance explains what the feature is intended to do, but does not publish a benchmark uplift for a particular PC configuration. Any improvement is therefore a system- and game-specific result, not a figure that can be assumed for everyone.
