Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Windows 11 Find My Device cannot locate your missing laptop, first check that you are signed in to the personal Microsoft account used on that PC and that Find My Device was enabled before it went missing. Then request a location and, if the option appears, lock the device. A blank or old map result does not prove the laptop is safe or stolen: location depends on setup and available signals, and Microsoft does not promise a live location.
Try Find My Device from the right Microsoft account
- On another phone or computer, go to account.microsoft.com/devices and sign in with the personal Microsoft account used to sign in to the missing laptop. If you have multiple accounts, check each one that may have been used on the PC.
- Select the laptop in the device list and open Find My Device.
- Select Find to request a location. If Lock is available, follow the on-screen steps to secure the device remotely. Microsoft says the person using the device receives a notification when you attempt to locate it.
These steps work only if Find My Device was switched on before the loss. Microsoft lists a personal Microsoft account, an administrator account type, and device location enabled among the prerequisites. There is no supported way in these instructions to enable the feature remotely after the laptop has gone missing. See Microsoft’s lost-device instructions for the account workflow and prerequisites.

Why the map may be blank, broad, or out of date
Windows can estimate location using GPS, nearby wireless access points and routers, cell towers, an IP address, or a default location. What is available depends on the laptop and its circumstances, so a map pin is not guaranteed to be precise or current. Microsoft also describes cloud-saved last-known location when a feature accesses location; a displayed position may therefore be older rather than a live fix. Read Microsoft’s explanation of Windows location service and privacy.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- The laptop is not listed: verify the account used to sign in to Windows. Microsoft says Windows 11 devices generally appear in the account’s device list after sign-in; under circumstances described in its device-management guidance, listing can take up to 24 hours. That is a device-list timing detail, not a promise that location will update within 24 hours.
- The laptop is listed but Find is unavailable or returns nothing: setup requirements may not have been met, or usable location data may not be available. The Microsoft documentation does not provide a complete diagnosis for every individual device, so these are possibilities rather than a confirmed cause.
- The laptop is managed by work or school: an organization-managed or organization-owned PC may not be registerable to a personal Microsoft account. Contact the organization’s IT or security team for its device recovery process. See Microsoft’s device-management guidance.
If you suspect the laptop was stolen
Report the theft to local law enforcement and your insurer. To find the serial number, open the laptop’s entry on your Microsoft account device page and look under Info and support. If the account page offers Lock, use it. Do not go to a map pin or confront whoever may be there; a location result does not establish who has the laptop or whether the location is current.

Review the security of the Microsoft account and other accounts that may have been signed in on the missing PC. If it belongs to an employer or school, notify IT or the organization’s security contact promptly and follow its incident-reporting process; personal-device instructions do not replace organizational management.

Find My Device is for locating a device and may offer remote locking; it is not a substitute for data encryption. BitLocker can protect data at rest, but it does not locate hardware. Its recovery key is a 48-digit number that may be saved to a personal Microsoft account, a work or school account, printed, or stored on a USB drive, depending on setup. Microsoft Support says it cannot retrieve or recreate a lost recovery key. See Microsoft’s BitLocker recovery-key guidance.
