Windows 11’s recent File Explorer updates bring qualitative launch and Home responsiveness improvements, a simplified right-click menu for some devices, new tab navigation, clearer file-size units, and reliability fixes. Which changes you can use depends on your Windows release branch, build, and rollout status; Microsoft has not published benchmark timings for the speed claims.
Did Windows 11 File Explorer get faster?
Microsoft describes File Explorer performance as improved, but its update notes do not quantify the change in seconds or percentages. Treat “faster” as Microsoft’s qualitative description, not as a measured result or a guarantee that every PC will feel quicker.

- In the July 28, 2026 preview for build 28000.2608, Microsoft said it improved File Explorer launch speed and performance. Microsoft’s KB5101681 notes also cover responsiveness and reliability work.
- In the September 22, 2026 preview for Windows 11 26H1 build 28000.3086, Microsoft said launching File Explorer Home is faster and more responsive. The same notes mention touch scrolling in Recommended. See the KB5124006 notes.
- An August 27, 2026 preview for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 builds 26200.9278 and 26100.9278 also describes faster, more responsive Home and touch scrolling in Recommended. See the KB5120998 notes.
These build numbers belong to different Windows branches, so one note does not establish that the same change has reached every Windows 11 device.

What changed in the File Explorer right-click menu?
A February 24, 2026 Windows 11 26H1 preview described a simplified context menu that groups common actions such as Share, Copy, and Move in one more organized menu. Microsoft said it was initially available to a small group of devices while the company evaluated the approach; it is not a feature that all users should expect to see at once.

The same preview updated copy, move, and delete dialogs, progress bars, confirmation prompts, and error dialogs for more consistent dark-mode styling. Those interface changes are documented for build 28000.1643. Read Microsoft’s KB5077239 notes.
How do I open folders in new File Explorer tabs?
On builds that include the July 2026 navigation change, middle-click a folder in File Explorer Home or in the address bar to open it in a new tab. The change is listed for preview builds 26200.8973 and 26100.8973; if middle-clicking does not open a tab, your device may not have the relevant update or rollout yet.

The same update makes file sizes easier to scan in Details view by showing appropriate units such as KB, MB, and GB instead of using KB only. Microsoft’s KB5101684 notes cover both changes.

| Change | Windows branch or preview build in Microsoft’s notes | What the notes establish |
|---|---|---|
| File Explorer launch performance | Build 28000.2608, July 28, 2026 preview | Qualitative launch-speed and performance improvement; no timing measurement stated. |
| Faster File Explorer Home launch | 26H1, build 28000.3086, September 22, 2026 preview | Home is described as faster and more responsive. |
| Home responsiveness and Recommended touch scrolling | 24H2/25H2, builds 26200.9278 and 26100.9278, August 27, 2026 preview | Both changes are described in the preview notes; rollout can be phased. |
| Simplified context menu and darker dialogs | 26H1, build 28000.1643, February 24, 2026 preview | Menu initially offered to a small group; dialogs and related UI receive dark-mode updates. |
| Middle-click folder to open a tab; file sizes in suitable units | Builds 26200.8973 and 26100.8973, July 2026 preview | Navigation and Details-view display changes. |
A preview release note describes changes for that update and branch; it does not confirm that every device has received them. Microsoft says feature rollouts can be phased, so availability may vary by device. KB5120998 explains the phased rollout context.

How to check your Windows version and update history
- Open Settings → System → About and check the Windows specifications, including the version and OS build.
- Open Settings → Windows Update → Update history to review updates installed on the device.
- Compare the version and build with the branch and build named in the relevant Microsoft release note. A matching branch alone does not prove a staged feature has reached the PC.
If a feature is absent, first verify the installed build and update history rather than assuming File Explorer is broken. The cited notes describe previews and staged availability; they do not provide a universal date when every eligible device will receive each change.

Microsoft’s October 28, 2025 preview notes list fixes for context menus switching between views, folder views resetting, clicks failing after a context menu was opened, failures extracting large archives, and File Explorer Home hangs. These are fixes to specific reported problems, not evidence that every user experienced them. See the KB5067036 notes for builds 26200.7019 and 26100.7019.
