IT admins need both streams: quality updates maintain security and reliability within a version, while feature updates move devices to a supported version before its servicing period ends.
How feature and quality updates differ
| Question | Feature update | Quality update |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Introduces a new Windows version and its features or changes. | Provides cumulative security and non-security fixes and improvements for the installed version. |
| Typical cadence | Annual, in the second half of the calendar year, according to Microsoft’s published release cycle. | Monthly security updates typically arrive on the second Tuesday. Optional non-security previews typically arrive in the fourth week. |
| Changes the Windows version? | Yes. | No. Installing the latest cumulative update brings the current version up to date; it does not upgrade to a new annual version. |
| Support impact | Starts the new version’s servicing timeline. | Does not extend the servicing period of the installed version. |
| Admin control | Intune feature-update policies target a Windows version and when it may install; staged rollout can help manage compatibility and readiness. | Intune quality-update policies, update rings, and Windows Update client settings manage regular or expedited servicing and related controls. |
| Validation and urgency | Plan readiness and phased deployment because the version change can affect user experience, applications, and devices. | Routine monthly servicing is distinct from optional previews and exceptional out-of-band releases, which may need separate validation or deployment decisions. |
Microsoft defines a quality update as “an incremental monthly update to Windows products that includes bug fixes, feature improvements, and security issue resolutions.” The two streams are complementary: one does not replace the other. Microsoft Lifecycle FAQ – Windows

What counts as a quality update?
The monthly security release is cumulative: it includes new fixes and previously released fixes. In applicable cases, it also includes non-security content from the preceding optional preview. Installing the latest cumulative update for a device’s version therefore brings that version up to date without changing the Windows version.

Monthly security updates
Microsoft’s normal schedule places monthly security updates on the second Tuesday. They are also commonly called Patch Tuesday, Update Tuesday, B-week releases, security updates, or latest cumulative updates. The published cadence describes typical timing; it does not guarantee that every device receives an update at the same moment. Windows client update release cycle

Optional non-security previews
Optional cumulative previews typically arrive in the fourth week of the month. They can let organizations validate upcoming non-security content early; content may later be included in the next monthly security release. Whether to use previews depends on the value of early validation and the organization’s change process.
Out-of-band releases and continuing innovation
Microsoft can release out-of-band updates as needed to address exceptional issues or vulnerabilities. Check the individual release’s classification and delivery route before deciding whether an off-cycle deployment is required.

New functionality can also arrive between annual feature updates. Microsoft describes a continuous-innovation approach in which features may first appear in an optional non-security preview and later in a monthly security update. Some potentially disruptive features are temporarily off by default on managed devices and can be enabled through policy. Support depends on the Windows version and edition
Each Windows 11 version has its own servicing period. Microsoft’s lifecycle documentation lists 24 months for Home, Home/SE, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations, and 36 months for Enterprise, Education, Enterprise multi-session, and IoT Enterprise. Check the specific release’s end-of-servicing date: an edition’s general support duration is not a substitute for the date that determines whether a particular device remains in servicing. A device can continue receiving monthly quality updates only while its installed version remains in servicing. Track version and edition together, then schedule the move to a supported feature version before that release’s end-of-servicing date.
Release-specific exception: Windows 11 version 26H1
Microsoft says version 26H1 is scoped to support new devices and is not designed as a feature update for existing devices. Its IT-pro guidance identifies 24H2 and 25H2 as the recommended enterprise releases. Because this is specific to those releases and can change with current release guidance, verify Microsoft’s release-health and release-information pages before making rollout decisions. How admins can manage the two update streams
Target and stage a feature update
In Intune, a feature-update policy lets an organization specify the Windows version offered to devices and when it can install. Microsoft describes controlled, phased rollouts as a common approach because a feature update can affect user experience, application compatibility, and device readiness. Select the target version and rollout timing in light of the actual fleet and organizational change windows. Manage Windows updates in Microsoft Intune
Service quality updates routinely
Intune quality-update policies provide a policy surface for regular updates. Update rings and Windows Update client settings can also govern matters such as restarts, deadlines, and notifications. Microsoft supports configuring Windows Update client policies through Group Policy or an MDM solution such as Intune; the available controls include separate pause controls for feature and quality updates. Expedite a critical update when needed
Intune quality-update policies support expedited deployment scenarios for a specific security or critical update. Hotpatch is another documented option for supported devices, but it is security-only; a quarterly baseline update that requires a restart is needed to bring devices up to date on all features. Confirm that the fleet and scenario meet Microsoft’s current eligibility requirements before relying on hotpatch. Manage Windows updates in Microsoft Intune Windows client update release cycle
Make a deliberate decision about previews and exceptional fixes
Use optional previews when early validation of upcoming non-security content is useful. For an out-of-band release, confirm its classification, availability, and delivery instructions: it may require a decision outside the routine monthly process. Neither previews nor emergency releases should be treated as interchangeable with an annual feature-version migration.
Quick Recap
A practical planning checklist
- Record each device’s Windows version and edition, then identify that version’s published servicing end date.
- Keep supported devices current with cumulative quality updates; do not mistake a current patch level for a move to a newer Windows version.
- Plan a feature-version move before end of servicing, with readiness checks and phased deployment appropriate to the organization’s applications and devices.
- Choose management controls for each stream separately, including the target version for feature updates and the servicing, restart, deadline, and notification behavior for quality updates.
- Review release notes and release health for previews, out-of-band updates, and functionality delivered through continuous innovation.
- Recheck version-specific guidance and device eligibility before rollout, particularly where a release is scoped to new devices or hotpatch support is being considered.
