Windows 11 Feature Update vs. Cumulative Update: What’s the Difference?

A feature update moves Windows 11 to a new release; a cumulative update adds maintenance fixes to a supported release. Here’s how to distinguish them and understand the exceptions.

A feature update identifies a Windows 11 release, adds capabilities, and starts that release’s support lifecycle. A cumulative quality update maintains a supported release with security and other fixes; it does not, by itself, mean your PC has moved to a new Windows version. The distinction is useful, but not absolute: Microsoft also delivers some features through monthly servicing and Store updates.

Feature update vs. cumulative update at a glance

Question Feature update Cumulative quality update
What is it? A Windows release with a version designation, such as 24H2 or 25H2, and new capabilities. A maintenance update that accumulates fixes and security improvements for a Windows version.
How often? Microsoft describes Windows 11 feature updates as annual releases in the second half of the calendar year. More frequently; security updates are typically monthly, and optional non-security previews may also be offered.
Does it change the Windows version? Yes. It installs a different feature release. Not by itself. A KB number or OS build identifies an update, not a move to a different feature version.
Does it determine support? Yes. Each feature release has its own support lifecycle. No. Installing quality updates does not replace moving to a supported Windows version when required.
When do new features arrive? Some arrive with the annual release. Some features can also arrive through servicing updates, often gradually, or through Microsoft Store app updates.
Is a restart required? Completing installation commonly involves a restart; the exact experience varies. Standard updates commonly require a restart, but certain eligible hotpatch security updates can take effect without one.

Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ describes feature updates as adding functionality and capabilities, while quality updates are more frequent and mainly include smaller fixes and security updates. That is a useful rule of thumb, not a guarantee that every feature arrives only in a feature update or that a quality update contains nothing beyond fixes.

What “cumulative” means—and what it doesn’t

Cumulative servicing means maintenance updates build on earlier changes, so users generally do not have to install every prior monthly package one by one to get the latest fixes. It does not mean a PC has advanced to the next Windows feature version. Think of the Windows version as the release name and a KB number or OS build as an identifier for a particular update applied to that release.

Checkpoint updates for manual package management

Starting with Windows 11 version 24H2, Microsoft may publish checkpoint cumulative updates. These checkpoints reduce the incremental binary differences in later packages and are most relevant when administrators obtain packages manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog or use deployment images. Microsoft says Windows Update and WSUS users can still install the latest monthly security update or optional preview seamlessly, even when earlier checkpoint packages exist. See Microsoft’s Windows Update Standalone Installer description for the servicing details.

A KB can cover several Windows versions

A September 22, 2026 example makes the distinction concrete: Microsoft’s KB5124010 preview update is listed for Windows 11 versions 26H2, 25H2, and 24H2, with OS builds 26300.9550, 26200.9550, and 26100.9550 respectively. The shared KB identifies the update; it does not make those three PCs the same Windows version.

Why a feature may arrive outside a feature update

Microsoft says Windows 11 features can arrive in several ways: in the annual feature release, through periodic servicing updates, or through Microsoft Store updates for apps. A quality update can therefore include a feature, but a feature’s appearance is not proof that the PC has changed feature versions.

Availability can also be staged. Microsoft uses gradual rollouts to deliver features over time while checking device readiness, so two compatible PCs may not see the same feature at once. On organization-managed devices, policy can control or disable selected features, and IT administrators may schedule deployments. For consumer and non-managed business devices approaching the end of servicing, Windows Update can automatically initiate a feature update; managed fleets may follow their organization’s schedule.

Version numbers are not always a simple upgrade ladder. Microsoft’s Windows 11 version 26H1 information describes 26H1 as a release for select new devices, not an in-place update offered to existing 24H2 or 25H2 PCs. Those 26H1 devices are due to receive monthly security, quality, and feature updates, but not the next annual feature update planned for the second half of 2026.

Support, security updates, and edition-specific dates

Monthly quality updates are for supported Windows versions; they do not extend a release’s support lifecycle. A feature update matters when a PC needs to move to a release that is still supported. Microsoft’s current guidance says annual feature releases receive 24 months of support for Home and Pro and 36 months for Enterprise and Education, but check the lifecycle for the specific version and edition.

As of October 3, 2026, Microsoft lists Windows 11 version 24H2 end of updates as October 13, 2026 for Home and Pro, and October 12, 2027 for Enterprise and Education. These dates differ by edition, so confirm the edition installed on a PC and consult Microsoft’s 24H2 lifecycle notice before making upgrade decisions.

Restart exceptions: hotpatching and grouped updates

Do not assume every monthly update behaves identically. Microsoft’s hotpatching explanation, published April 25, 2025, describes a specialized option for eligible Windows 11 24H2 devices enrolled in hotpatching and kept on a baseline. Certain monthly security updates can take effect without restarting, while quarterly baseline updates still require a restart and include additional enhancements and non-security fixes. The cadence described there is four baseline updates a year for eligible enrolled devices, not a general promise for all Windows PCs.

Separately, Microsoft says updates released on and after July 28, 2026 can combine eligible driver, .NET, and firmware updates with the monthly security update for Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1, allowing them to share a restart. This affects update delivery and restart experience, not the difference between a feature version and a cumulative maintenance update. Details are in Microsoft’s one-restart-a-month update guidance.

How to tell which update you installed

  1. Find the update’s KB and build: Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history. Look for the installed update entry and its KB identifier.
  2. Find the Windows version and edition: Open Settings > System > About. Check the Windows specifications for the version, such as 24H2, and the edition, such as Home or Enterprise.
  3. Read the two labels separately: The KB/build tells you which update was installed; the version tells you which Windows release the device is running. A new monthly KB alone does not establish that a feature-version upgrade occurred.
