A Windows 11 feature update changes the operating-system version and adds features or enhancements. A cumulative update normally keeps that version in place while delivering accumulated security, reliability, and other fixes. The distinction is useful, but not absolute: Windows 11 can also deliver features in regular servicing updates, and Microsoft may roll them out gradually.
Feature update vs. cumulative update at a glance
| Question | Feature update | Cumulative quality/security update |
|---|---|---|
| What changes? | Moves Windows to a new version and introduces features or enhancements. | Services the installed version with accumulated security, reliability, and sometimes other improvements. |
| Typical timing | Usually once a year, in the second half of the calendar year. | Monthly security updates normally arrive on the second Tuesday. Optional previews typically arrive in the fourth week; urgent out-of-band releases can occur as needed. |
| Can it add features? | Yes. | Sometimes. Windows 11 also introduces some features through periodic servicing updates, with availability potentially phased. |
| Effect on support | Starts the support lifecycle for the new version: 24 months for Home and Pro, or 36 months for Enterprise and Education. | Maintains the current version; it does not start a new version support lifecycle. |
| Typical free-space guidance | 6–11 GB or more, according to Microsoft’s general guidance. | 2–3 GB or more, according to Microsoft’s general guidance. |
| Can it be removed? | Rollback is not universal; availability depends on the update and the device’s recovery state. | Some updates can be uninstalled, while others cannot. |
The timing and support details follow Microsoft’s Windows client release-cycle documentation and its Windows 11 update information. Space estimates are typical guidance, not minimum requirements or guarantees; actual needs vary by PC and update path.

What a feature update changes
A feature update moves the PC to a different Windows 11 version and can add capabilities or enhancements. Microsoft says annual feature updates are released in the second half of the calendar year. The update is typically cumulative in the sense that it includes previously released fixes as well as version changes; “feature update” does not mean it contains only new features.

Microsoft’s current guidance specifies 24 months of support for Home and Pro editions and 36 months for Enterprise and Education editions. The update offered to a particular PC depends on its version, edition, eligibility, and rollout status.

Do not assume every feature update uses the same installation method, download size, or installation time. Those details can vary with the update path and the PC. Microsoft does not establish one universal duration or size for all devices.
What “cumulative” means for monthly updates
A cumulative update collects earlier fixes along with new content, so a device installing the latest monthly security update generally does not need to install every older monthly update one by one. Microsoft describes the monthly security release as including new and previously released security fixes, along with nonsecurity content from the prior optional preview release. Windows Update handles the normal installation path; most users do not need to manage checkpoint packages themselves.
Microsoft’s monthly security release is commonly called Patch Tuesday, a quality update, a security update, or the latest cumulative update (LCU). Optional nonsecurity preview updates are also cumulative and give organizations and other users an opportunity to validate upcoming changes before the next monthly security release. Microsoft can issue an out-of-band update when an urgent issue or vulnerability cannot wait for the normal schedule.

Why a monthly update can include features
The shortcut “features come once a year, fixes come monthly” is not a complete description of Windows 11. Microsoft also delivers some features through periodic servicing updates and Microsoft Store app updates. A feature may appear in an optional preview first and then be included in a monthly security update.
Availability can also be controlled and phased. Two eligible PCs on the same Windows version may not receive a feature at the same time. A monthly update therefore does not necessarily mean the version number changes, and a feature appearing on a PC does not by itself prove that it received a new annual feature update. Microsoft explains these delivery channels in its Windows 11 feature delivery overview.
How to identify the update offered to your PC
- Open Settings > Windows Update to see what is currently offered and whether Windows reports a restart is needed.
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history to review installed updates and their KB identifiers.
- Check the Windows version and edition as well as the update name. A new version indicates a feature update; a monthly KB entry typically identifies a servicing update. A feature may still be delivered through a servicing update, and rollout can be phased.
- If you are diagnosing a problem or checking eligibility, compare the exact version and KB number with Microsoft’s current release-health information and the page for that specific update.
The name, KB number, edition, and device eligibility all matter when deciding what has changed or why an update is not offered.

Microsoft’s current free-space guidance, accessed in 2026, gives typical estimates of 6–11 GB or more for a feature update and 2–3 GB or more for a quality update. Actual requirements vary with the update path, optional features, installed languages, drivers, and PC configuration. Microsoft also says extra space is typically retained temporarily for removing an update; that storage guidance is not a guarantee that every update can be rolled back.

Leave adequate free space and allow time for a restart, but do not rely on a fixed installation-duration estimate. The update and device determine how long installation takes and whether a restart is needed.
There is a version-scoped change worth knowing about: Microsoft said on August 14, 2026, that, starting with Windows updates released on or after July 28, 2026, eligible updates requiring a restart are grouped with the monthly security update to target one restart per month on Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1. The rollout is gradual, so it may not yet apply to every eligible PC. Defender security intelligence, AI component updates, critical or expedited driver updates, emergency updates, and out-of-band fixes may still install promptly; many updates do not require a restart. This is not a promise of one restart per month for every Windows version or every update.
Microsoft allows updates to be paused for up to 35 days. Pausing delays security and other updates; it does not permanently disable them and is not a long-term substitute for installing security fixes. Consult Microsoft’s pause-update guidance for the current controls.
What to do if an update causes a problem
Some updates can be uninstalled, but removal is not available for every update. Removing a security update can leave the PC exposed to the issue it addressed, so weigh that risk before proceeding.

- When Windows is accessible, go to Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates.
- If Windows will not start normally, use Windows Recovery Environment and open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
- Choose the relevant update only if it is listed and removable. If the option is unavailable, that update cannot be removed through that route.
Microsoft’s instructions and cautions are in Uninstall a Windows update. Feature-update rollback is also conditional, not a universal safety net; the available recovery options depend on the update and recovery state.
Do you need to install every update?
You generally do not have to install every older cumulative update individually to stay current through Windows Update, because the latest monthly security update is cumulative. But delaying security updates leaves the PC without fixes they contain. Optional previews are separate from the monthly security release and are intended partly for early validation; whether to install one depends on your need to test changes before they become broadly available.
Feature updates have a different purpose: they move the PC to a newer Windows version and begin that version’s support period. Consider the offered release, edition, and device eligibility rather than treating every update notification as the same kind of change. Microsoft’s Windows release health pages provide version-specific status and known-issue information.
