Start here if Windows is not activated. You need an internet connection and an administrator account. Microsoft says the troubleshooter is available when Windows is not activated and may help resolve activation problems. Microsoft’s Activation troubleshooter instructions

- Connect the PC to the internet and sign in with an administrator account.
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot and follow the on-screen steps.
- If Windows still will not activate, continue with the edition and hardware checks below. Microsoft also provides guidance for Windows activation errors.
Check that your license matches Windows Home or Pro
A valid license for one edition does not automatically activate the other. Check the installed edition in Settings > System > Activation, then compare it with the edition associated with your digital license or product key. Microsoft’s documented outcomes are:

If activation failed after a hardware change
A Windows digital license is associated with a device. After a significant change—especially replacing the motherboard—Windows may not find the license associated with the previous hardware. - Sign in to Windows with the same Microsoft account linked to the digital license.
- Open Settings > System > Activation and select Troubleshoot.
- Choose I changed hardware on this device recently.
- Select the device that matches the PC and follow the instructions to activate.
The device must be associated with the account used for the license. If it is missing from the list or activation still fails, contact Microsoft support through its hardware-change reactivation instructions.

A digital license activates Windows without entering a key; a product key is a 25-character code. If you have a valid key for the installed edition, enter it through Settings > System > Activation > Change product key. Microsoft explains both activation methods in its Windows activation guide.

A key must correspond to the Windows edition and entitlement. If you do not know whether you have a digital license or key, check the account or purchase records associated with Windows before buying anything. If you have neither a valid digital license nor a valid key, Microsoft’s activation-error guidance directs you to select Microsoft Store and follow its purchase instructions. Contact Microsoft support if the troubleshooter does not resolve the issue, the hardware-change flow cannot find the device, or you believe your existing license should activate but Windows continues to reject it. Provide the exact code, the wording shown in Settings, the installed edition, and whether the error followed a reinstall, edition change, key entry, or hardware replacement. These details help distinguish an account or license recovery problem from an edition mismatch.
