Yes—Windows 11 can keep a cached thumbnail after you delete a photo, if File Explorer created a preview while the photo was still available. To clear the active thumbnail cache without deleting your other files, use Disk Cleanup and select only Thumbnails. That removes cached previews Windows uses; it is not proof that every recoverable trace has been securely erased.
Can Windows 11 keep a thumbnail after you delete a photo?
It can. When File Explorer renders an image, Windows may store its preview in a per-user thumbnail cache. Deleting the original photo does not necessarily remove a preview already in that cache. A thumbnail will not exist for every deleted photo, though: Explorer must have generated and cached it first.

For Windows 11, specialist forensic documentation and recent reporting place the per-user cache in %LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftWindowsExplorer, in files named thumbcache_*.db. The presence of a cache entry means a preview may persist; it does not establish that a particular deleted photo is still recoverable.
How to remove cached thumbnails with Disk Cleanup
Microsoft documents Disk Cleanup as the built-in route for removing the Thumbnails category. To limit the cleanup to previews:

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Open Start or Windows Search, type Disk Cleanup, and launch the app.
- If prompted, select the drive you want to clean—usually the Windows drive—and select OK.
- In the list of file categories, check Thumbnails. Uncheck other categories if you do not want to remove those files too.
- Select OK, then confirm the deletion.
A Microsoft Q&A response explains that this removes the thumbnail cache, not the original photos or their folders. File Explorer may temporarily show generic icons or blank previews; it can generate previews again as you browse folders. This is an explanation from a Q&A response, not a formal guarantee about every Windows build.
Does clearing the cache securely erase the previews?
No. Disk Cleanup is documented as ordinary file cleanup, not as a forensic wipe. Clearing the cache removes the active cached previews Windows uses, but it does not prove that every recoverable trace has been securely erased. Specialist forensic documentation notes that old entries may persist in unused database space, and other copies—such as shadow copies—may also matter.

A 2011 study tested thumbnail-cache deletion methods on Windows 7 and found that the tested methods did not securely delete the cache files. That result is historical evidence, not a Windows 11 test. The reviewed sources do not establish a Microsoft-backed Windows 11 procedure that guarantees forensic-grade erasure of every thumbnail trace. If you are handling highly sensitive data, do not treat routine cache cleanup as that assurance.

Can you stop thumbnails from appearing?
Microsoft’s policy documentation says, “File Explorer displays thumbnail images by default,” and documents an icon-only display policy. This is a way to reduce thumbnail display; it is distinct from clearing previews that have already been cached.

Microsoft also documents a policy for turning off caching in hidden thumbs.db files for network folders. That setting concerns network-folder caching; it is not evidence that all local per-user thumbnail caching is disabled. The policy documentation does not establish that either setting securely erases existing cached data.

What to do based on your goal
| Goal | Relevant option | What it does—and does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Remove active previews already cached | Disk Cleanup → Thumbnails | Clears the thumbnail cache Windows uses. It does not delete original photos and does not guarantee forensic-grade erasure. |
| Reduce future thumbnail display | Microsoft’s icon-only display policy | Changes display behavior; it is not a cleanup method for previews already cached. |
| Change caching behavior for network folders | Microsoft’s hidden thumbs.db caching policy |
Applies to network-folder caching, not proof that local per-user caching is disabled. |
