Windows 11 Default Apps: Reset Associations One by One

Windows 11 does not document a one-click reset for all default app associations. Change the file or link types you need under Settings > Apps > Default apps.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 11 does not have a documented single switch to reset every default app association to recommended values. To change what opens a particular file or link, go to Settings > Apps > Default apps and update that association.

Change a default app for one file or link type

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.

  2. Search for the file extension or link type you want to change, such as .txt, then select it.

  3. Choose the app you want Windows to use for that type.

Microsoft documents changing defaults by file type or link type, rather than restoring all associations at once. See Microsoft’s instructions for changing default apps in Windows 11.

Change defaults from an app’s settings

In Settings > Apps > Default apps, select the app whose associations you want to review. Windows shows the file and link types it supports; select an association and choose the app you want to use for it. Repeat for each type that needs changing.

“Recommended” app settings are separate

The setting for where apps can be obtained, along with options for showing recommendations or warnings, is under Settings > Apps > Advanced app settings. It controls app-source guidance, not which apps open file extensions or links. Microsoft describes these separately from Default apps; see also its app recommendation settings guidance.

What the other reset options do

Repair or reset an individual app

For some installed apps, Windows offers Repair and then Reset in that app’s Advanced options. These actions apply to the selected app, and Microsoft notes that they are not available for every app. They are not a documented system-wide way to restore default app associations. Follow Microsoft’s app repair and reset guidance if the app itself is malfunctioning.

Reset this PC

Reset this PC reinstalls Windows. Depending on the option you choose, apps and settings can be removed, so it is a broad recovery action—not a targeted fix for one file-opening association. Back up important files before starting. Microsoft explains the available recovery options in its Windows recovery options guide and its Windows backup guidance.
