Choose a setting, apply it, and test the app. To undo it, return to the same tab and clear or change the setting. If the tab is missing or you are unsure which fix to use, try Windows’ Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
Open Compatibility settings for the app
- Find the program file. If you normally launch the app from a shortcut, use the shortcut’s file-location option to locate the installed program. For a game launched through a store or launcher, check the game’s executable rather than assuming the launcher shortcut is the right file. This is a troubleshooting lead, not a guaranteed fix for every app. Microsoft Q&A
- Open Properties. Right-click the program file and select Properties, then select Compatibility.
- Choose a relevant setting and apply it. Change one setting that matches the problem, apply it, and test the app. The Compatibility tab provides controls for fixes; it does not tell you which specific fix to choose. Microsoft Learn’s Compatibility Cookbook
Change or remove a compatibility setting
Reopen Properties for the same program file and return to Compatibility. Change a selected option to try a different fix, or clear it to remove that setting, then apply the change and test the app again. Microsoft’s walkthrough describes revisiting the tab to change or remove fixes; because that guidance dates to the Windows 8 era, exact control labels may differ in Windows 11. Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter
If you do not know which compatibility option to select, or the manual setting has not helped, use Microsoft’s guided troubleshooter:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and select Run.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and test the app with the suggested settings.

If the Compatibility tab is missing
- Check which file’s Properties you opened. A launcher or store shortcut may not be the app’s actual program file. Locate the installed executable and check its Properties instead. A Microsoft Q&A response suggests this for some games, but it is community advice rather than a universal Windows rule. Microsoft Q&A
- Try the troubleshooter. If checking the executable does not reveal the tab, use the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter steps above. Microsoft’s support guidance covers the troubleshooter but does not give an exhaustive list of reasons the tab might be absent. Microsoft Support
- Ask the app’s publisher. The publisher can confirm whether the app supports Windows 11 and advise which compatibility settings, if any, are appropriate.
Check for updates before relying on a workaround
For an app installed from Microsoft Store, check for updates there. For other apps, check the software publisher’s site. Microsoft also recommends updating device drivers in some cases where an app is glitchy or unresponsive. Its support guidance notes: “If an app doesn’t have updates, you can use the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter for assistance.” Microsoft Support
