Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStart with the camera troubleshooter in the Get Help app, then work through the physical, permission, update, driver and hardware checks below in order. Most “camera not working” cases on Windows 11 come down to a privacy setting, one misbehaving app, or a driver that changed after an update. Each fix below tells you what to check and what the result means. Menu names can differ slightly between Windows 11 builds.
First, work out which kind of problem you have
Five quick observations decide which fix to try first:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Built-in camera or USB webcam? An external camera adds cable, port and second-device tests.
- Does the Camera app work? If it does but one other app fails, the problem is that app’s settings or its permission.
- Which permission is off? Device-level, app-level and desktop-app access are separate switches.
- Did it break after an update? If so, the driver is the prime suspect.
- Does Device Manager list the camera? A missing device points to connection, detection or driver trouble.
1. Run the Windows 11 camera troubleshooter
Open Get Help and run the camera troubleshooter. Microsoft recommends this as the starting point on Windows 11. It runs diagnostics and tries fixes automatically. If it can’t resolve the problem, continue with the steps below.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →2. Check the physical switch, shutter and connection
- Laptop: look for a camera key on the keyboard, a function-key combination, a side switch, or a sliding privacy shutter over the lens.
- External webcam: reseat the USB cable and try a different port.
- External webcam, further test: plug it into another computer if you can. If it fails there too, the camera is the likely fault. If it works there, the cause is on your PC.
3. Turn on camera privacy access
- Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
- Make sure device-level camera access is on. If it is greyed out, an administrator may control it (common on work or school PCs).
- Turn on Let apps access your camera, then enable the specific Microsoft Store apps you need.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your camera. Browsers, Microsoft Teams and many meeting apps count as desktop apps. They may not appear in the per-app list, and Windows doesn’t give them individual toggles.
4. Test with the built-in Camera app
Open Start > Camera and see whether a preview appears.

- Camera app works, another app doesn’t: open the affected app’s video settings and confirm it has selected the right camera. Then recheck the desktop-app permission from step 3.
- No app works: continue with updates, security software and Device Manager.
5. Install updates and restart
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates and install what’s offered.
- If nothing relevant appears, open Advanced options > Optional updates and look for driver updates.
- Restart the PC. Waking it from sleep doesn’t count as a restart.
- Retest in the Camera app.
6. Check antivirus and firewall settings
Some security products block camera access. Look for camera or webcam protection in the product’s own privacy settings and allow the app you need. Microsoft advises checking these settings. Adjust the specific rule rather than leaving protection switched off.
7. Recover the camera in Device Manager
Right-click Start, open Device Manager, and look under Cameras, Imaging devices or Sound, video and game controllers.

Rollback unavailable or ineffective
Microsoft’s guide describes uninstalling the camera device, then running Scan for hardware changes so Windows reinstalls it. Restart and test again.
Advanced option: the in-box UVC driver
Microsoft states: “If your webcam is not working correctly, swapping to the in-box UVC driver may resolve the issue.” There is a trade-off. The in-box driver may not support every camera feature. Microsoft’s example is Windows Hello face recognition, where the maker’s driver uses custom USB extensions the in-box driver lacks. Try this only if the simpler steps failed, and be ready to switch back.

8. Contact the manufacturer if it still fails
Microsoft’s guidance at this point is to seek help on the camera maker’s website. For a built-in camera, use the computer maker’s support pages, which may offer model-specific drivers or firmware steps. For a USB camera, use the webcam maker’s. If the evidence points to dead hardware, a USB webcam is a practical substitute for a failed integrated camera. Don’t buy one before the earlier checks, and test the new one in the Camera app first.
