When Bluetooth fails on Windows 11, the cause is almost always one of five things: the PC has no Bluetooth hardware, the Bluetooth radio is switched off, the accessory is not ready to pair, a saved pairing has gone stale, or the adapter driver is faulty. The eight steps below run from the quickest checks to the most invasive, and you can stop as soon as the connection works.
Match your symptom to the right starting step
Use this table to find where to begin. Most readers only need the first column and one or two steps from the list that follows.

| Symptom | Start with | Escalate to |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth is missing from Settings or Quick Settings | Step 2 (confirm hardware), then Step 3 | Step 8 if the toggle is missing or grayed out |
| Device does not appear in the list of nearby devices | Step 4, then Step 5 | Step 6 (pair again) |
| A previously paired device will not connect | Step 6 (remove and pair again) | Step 7 (update driver) |
| Connection is sluggish or drops out | Step 4 (check USB 3.0 interference) | Step 7 |
| Adapter is listed in Device Manager but its Bluetooth icon is missing | Step 8 | Contact the PC manufacturer |
| Device connects but produces no sound | Not covered by these steps; Microsoft lists it as a separate issue label, “Bluetooth connected but no sound” | Not covered |
Eight fixes, in order
1. Run the Get Help Bluetooth troubleshooter
Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance says to start here. Open Get Help from the Start menu, search for Bluetooth, and run the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter. If it reports no fix, move on; the remaining steps address causes the troubleshooter may not detect.
2. Confirm the PC actually has Bluetooth
Some PCs ship without Bluetooth hardware, and on those machines the toggle will never appear. Look up your exact model in the manufacturer’s product specifications. On a laptop, also check for a physical Bluetooth or wireless switch on the body or a function-key switch, since a switched-off radio looks identical to a missing one.

Open Quick Settings from the taskbar and check that Bluetooth is on and Airplane mode is off. You can also go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices. If Bluetooth is already on, Microsoft suggests turning it off, waiting a few seconds, and turning it back on, which clears a radio that has stopped responding.
4. Check the peripheral itself
Most failed connections are on the accessory side. Before changing anything on the PC, confirm that the device is:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a USB Bluetooth adapter makes sense
An adapter is only a solution when your PC lacks Bluetooth hardware, which you confirmed in Step 2. It adds Bluetooth capability to a computer that has none. It does not repair pairing, peripheral, or driver faults on a PC whose built-in radio is already present and enabled, so if the toggle exists, work through Steps 3 to 8 first.
If you do need one, search for a Bluetooth USB adapter for Windows 11 and check three things before buying:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Windows 11 support is stated for the exact hardware revision, not just the product family. TP-Link’s UB500 has separate support listings by hardware version. For example, its support page lists a Windows 11 driver for UB500 V3.60.
- Driver availability varies by region, so check the manufacturer’s support page for your country.
- The revision number is printed on the adapter or its packaging; match it to the support listing rather than to the product name.
Sources reviewed for this guide do not rank adapter brands, so choose on revision and support rather than on a reported performance comparison.
