Windows 11 Bluetooth Device Not Showing Up: Troubleshooting Steps

Troubleshoot a Bluetooth device that is missing from Windows 11, with separate steps for discovery, a missing Bluetooth control, and failed pairing.

If a Bluetooth device does not appear in Windows 11, first make sure the accessory is powered on and in pairing mode. Then check Windows’ Bluetooth settings and discovery mode. A missing or grayed-out Bluetooth control points to a different problem—possibly the PC’s adapter or driver—while a device that appears but will not connect needs pairing fixes instead.

If the device is missing from the Bluetooth list

1. Put the accessory in pairing mode

Turn on the accessory, charge it or replace its batteries, and bring it near the PC. Put it into pairing or discoverable mode, following the device’s manual or manufacturer’s instructions: the method varies by device, as Microsoft’s pairing instructions explain. If it is already on, turn it off briefly and back on, then retry.

2. Check Bluetooth and Airplane mode

Open Quick Settings from the taskbar. Make sure Airplane mode is off and Bluetooth is on. You can also check Bluetooth under Settings > Bluetooth & devices. If Bluetooth is already enabled, switch it off and back on once, then check the device list again.

Keep the accessory within range and check whether a nearby unshielded USB device plugged into a USB 3.0 port could be interfering. Microsoft lists this as a possible cause of Bluetooth connection problems in its Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance.

3. Change Bluetooth discovery to Advanced

  1. Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
  2. Set Bluetooth devices discovery to Advanced.
  3. With the accessory still in pairing mode, check the list again.

Microsoft says the Default setting shows common Bluetooth devices, while Advanced displays all types. If the accessory remains absent, move on to checking the PC rather than repeatedly refreshing the list.

If the Bluetooth control is missing or grayed out

A missing or unavailable Bluetooth toggle can indicate an issue with the PC’s Bluetooth hardware, driver, or firmware. Some computers do not include Bluetooth at all; check the PC’s specifications if you are unsure. Microsoft identifies both possibilities in its Windows Bluetooth troubleshooting steps.

  1. Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app.
  2. Try a full shutdown: hold Shift while selecting Start > Power > Shut down. After the PC powers off, wait one minute, then turn it on.
  3. Check Device Manager > Bluetooth for the adapter. If it is listed, update its driver.
  4. Check Windows Update for optional driver updates, and consult the PC manufacturer’s support site for model-specific driver or firmware updates.
  5. If the control remains missing or gray, contact the PC manufacturer for help with the hardware.

If the PC has no Bluetooth adapter, a USB Bluetooth adapter can add Bluetooth through a USB port. Check the PC’s specifications and manufacturer guidance before choosing one. An adapter is for a computer confirmed to lack Bluetooth; it is not a general fix for an existing adapter with a settings or driver problem.

If the device appears but will not pair or connect

A device that appears in Windows has passed discovery, so use connection fixes rather than changing discovery settings. Confirm that it is still in pairing mode, charged, and within range. Then try these steps:
