If Windows 11 went black right after you changed the resolution, first reset the graphics driver, then cycle the display-output mode. If that does not restore the picture, use Windows Recovery Environment to start with low-resolution video and choose the display’s Recommended resolution once the desktop returns. The timing suggests a display-setting issue, but does not prove that the resolution change caused the black screen.
Try the quick display checks first
- Reset the graphics driver: press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. A beep or screen flicker may indicate that Windows reset the driver. Microsoft lists this as a blank-screen troubleshooting step (Microsoft’s blank-screen guide).
- Cycle the display-output mode: press Windows+P, tap P again, then press Enter. This cycles through modes such as PC screen only, duplicate, and extend. Wait briefly to see whether the picture returns before repeating the shortcut.
- Check an external display connection, if applicable: make sure the monitor is powered on and the cable is firmly connected at both ends. If possible, try another compatible cable or monitor to rule out a connection problem. This check applies to external displays; it does not reset a Windows resolution setting.
Use Windows Recovery Environment if the screen stays black
Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) provides access to Startup Settings even when you cannot use the desktop. If you can still navigate Windows, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup and select Restart now. You can also hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.

If Windows is not navigable, recovery may start automatically after repeated failed starts. Microsoft also describes interrupting startup twice: turn on the PC, wait for the Windows or manufacturer logo, hold the power button until it shuts down, and repeat once. Start it a third time; Automatic Repair should appear, where you can select Advanced options. A manufacturer recovery button, recovery drive, or Windows installation media may provide another route. Some recovery tools on encrypted devices may ask for the BitLocker recovery key. See Microsoft’s Windows RE guidance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Start with low-resolution video
- In Windows RE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the PC restarts and displays the Startup Settings choices, select Enable low-resolution video.
- Once Windows starts, use the visible desktop to reset the display resolution. This option uses the current video driver with low resolution and refresh-rate settings; it is intended for resetting display settings, not for repairing every possible black-screen cause. Microsoft describes it separately from Safe Mode (Startup Settings options).
Use Safe Mode when low-resolution video is not enough
Return to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart and choose a Safe Mode option. For Safe Mode with Networking, Microsoft specifies pressing F5. Safe Mode loads a limited set of files and drivers; if the display problem does not recur there, that helps narrow the cause. Networking adds network drivers and services, so use it only if you need network access for troubleshooting.

Set the resolution after the picture returns
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select the affected display if more than one is shown.
- Under Display resolution, choose the option marked Recommended. The appropriate value depends on the display, so there is no one resolution number that fits every PC.
Microsoft notes that a resolution below a monitor’s native resolution can make text less sharp or the image small, centered, bordered by black, or stretched. If the resolution changes unexpectedly, its guidance suggests checking for graphics-driver updates through Windows Update. See Microsoft’s resolution and layout instructions.
Check the driver if the problem followed an update
If the screen went black after a graphics-driver or Windows update, use Device Manager in Safe Mode to update or roll back the graphics driver, depending on what changed. A rollback is relevant when the problem began after an update; updating may be appropriate when the driver is outdated. Neither action is a guaranteed fix, and driver changes are not the first step when the quick display checks may be enough. Microsoft covers these options in its blank-screen troubleshooting guidance.
Consider System Restore only if a suitable restore point exists
If the issue began recently and a suitable restore point is available, System Restore can return system files, registry settings, and installed programs to the state captured by that point without affecting personal files. It can be started from Windows or Windows RE. It is distinct from Reset this PC. Details are in Microsoft’s System Restore guidance.

Choose recovery steps by how much they change
| Option | When it fits | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics reset or display-mode cycling | First checks for a blank display | Attempts to restore graphics or switch where Windows sends its output; does not intentionally roll back files or programs. |
| Low-resolution video or Safe Mode | The quick checks fail and Windows RE is accessible | Starts Windows with a different display configuration or a limited driver and service set. |
| Driver update or rollback | The issue is plausibly tied to a driver change or outdated driver | Changes the graphics driver; choose update or rollback according to what changed. |
| System Restore | A suitable restore point exists and the problem followed a recent system change | Reverts system files, registry settings, and installed programs to the selected restore point; Microsoft says personal files are not affected. |
| Reset or reinstall Windows | Less disruptive options have failed and broader recovery is warranted | Effects vary by option; some recovery choices can cause data loss. Review Microsoft’s recovery options and their effects before proceeding. |
Microsoft recommends beginning with the least disruptive recovery option. Its current recovery guidance describes point-in-time restore for eligible Windows 11 devices running version 24H2 or later; it rolls back apps, settings, and personal files to a recent automatic snapshot. Availability and effects vary by recovery option, so do not jump to a reset or reinstall for a problem that may be limited to display output.
Use the symptom to narrow the next step
A black screen immediately after a resolution change does not establish an unsupported-resolution fault. The issue may instead involve display-output mode, an external connection, a graphics driver, an update, or another startup/display problem. Whether the PC reaches the sign-in screen, whether a cursor is visible, and whether the affected display is internal or external can help distinguish the situation.
- Blank screen with a cursor: Microsoft says this can involve a stalled Windows process or driver.
- Blank screen at sign-in: output configuration or a corrupted profile may be involved.
- Blank screen after an update: a driver issue or incomplete update may be involved.
- Blinking cursor: this can indicate a boot-device issue rather than a resolution problem.
A black screen with an error message or stop code is a different symptom; use Microsoft’s separate stop-code troubleshooting guidance rather than treating it as a display-resolution issue.
