Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor most Windows 11 and Windows 10 update failures, the safest first move is to back up personal files, note the exact error or stalled percentage, and run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter. Restart afterward and check for updates again. If the problem remains, use the displayed code and symptom to choose the next step rather than applying a one-size-fits-all repair.
Before troubleshooting, record what happened and back up files
Before changing update components or system settings, back up personal files. Microsoft suggests copying files to a USB drive or backing up selected folders with OneDrive in its Windows update troubleshooting guide.

Write down the exact error code, whether the failure happened during download, installation, or restart, and the percentage shown if progress appears stuck. These details help distinguish a connection or storage issue from a service, file, or driver problem.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft directs Windows 11 users to the automated troubleshooter in Get Help. Windows 10 users can start with Get Help as well. The Settings routes below are also documented by Microsoft; labels may differ slightly between devices or interface updates.
#1 Best Overall
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run. Alternatively, open Get Help and start the automated Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Follow the on-screen suggestions. When it finishes, restart the PC and select Check for updates.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then select Run. Get Help is another automated starting point.
- Follow the on-screen suggestions, restart the PC, and check for updates again.
Microsoft says to run the troubleshooter again if the issue continues, since it may find additional errors. See its Windows Update Troubleshooter guidance for the current sequence.
Use the error code as a clue, not a diagnosis
Microsoft lists possible causes for common update codes, but a code does not prove a single cause. Match the code and the context in which it appeared, then consult Microsoft’s detailed upgrade and installation error guidance before making system changes.
| Error code | Possible explanation Microsoft lists | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| 0x8007000d | Problem with Windows Update files or corruption in the update cache | Start with the troubleshooter. Microsoft also describes clearing the SoftwareDistribution download cache by stopping and restarting the Windows Update service; back up files first and follow the official instructions carefully. |
| 0x800705b4 | Update took too long to install or was interrupted | Check the connection, restart, and run the troubleshooter. Microsoft’s guidance also discusses service and cache checks. |
| 0x80240034 | Incomplete update or connection issue | Check the internet connection and that Windows Update services are running, then run the troubleshooter. |
| 0x800f0922 | In Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance, insufficient storage or component-related issues; its upgrade-error guidance also describes inability to connect to update servers as one possible meaning | Use the instructions for the exact update context; do not assume one cause from the code alone. |
| 0xC1900101 | Incompatible driver causing an update failure | Microsoft’s relevant guidance suggests addressing network or graphics drivers and a clean boot. Driver removal is more advanced: identify the device and ensure you can restore its driver before changing it. |
| 0x80248014 | Windows Update database problem or service not running | Check service status and run the troubleshooter. |
| 0x80070005 | Access denied or insufficient permissions | Check administrator access. If this is a managed work or school device, ask the administrator. |
| 0x80070002 or 0x80070003 | Update failed to install | Restart, run the troubleshooter, and check available storage. |
| 0x80070422 | Windows Update service is disabled or stopped | Check that the service is enabled and running, following Microsoft’s guidance. |
| 0x80070020 | Another program or process blocks the update process | Restart and use Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps to investigate possible interference. |
Windows Update stuck at 0% or 100%
If a download or installation appears stalled at 0% or 100%, Microsoft recommends restarting, checking the internet connection, and checking available storage. A percentage by itself does not establish that the update has failed.
- Confirm the PC is connected to the internet.
- Check that the device has available storage for the update.
- Restart Windows, then check for updates again.
Microsoft notes that update duration depends on connection speed, network settings, and update size. Its guidance does not give a fixed waiting period that guarantees an update is stuck.
Rank #3
Windows Update got to 51–99% and won’t complete installation
Microsoft gives the same important context for installs that remain in this range: time varies with connection speed, network settings, and update size. If the percentage remains unchanged, check for updates again or run the troubleshooter. Avoid interrupting an installation solely because it is taking longer than expected; use the displayed error, if any, to guide the next step.
When to try more advanced steps—or ask for help
Start with the built-in troubleshooter and basic connection and storage checks. Service changes, clearing update caches, clean boots, or driver changes can affect system behavior, so follow Microsoft’s code-specific instructions rather than trying several repairs at once. If Microsoft’s initial steps do not resolve the issue, consult its upgrade and installation error page for the next applicable route.
On a work- or school-managed PC, contact the administrator before changing update services, disabling security software, or removing drivers. Consumer support guidance does not define organization-specific update policies.
What Windows 10’s end of support means for updates
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The PC continues to work, and Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. See the current Windows Update Troubleshooter page for Microsoft’s support-status statement.
