The PC must also have Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 preview update KB5124010 (OS Build 26100.9546) or a later cumulative update. Even then, Microsoft may delay the offer during its phased rollout or place a compatibility safeguard hold on a device.
Which PCs qualify for the 26H2 enablement package?
Microsoft’s KB5121794 package activates features that have already been delivered through monthly servicing updates. The supported starting versions are:

| Current Windows version | 26H2 enablement route | Additional condition |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 24H2 | Eligible in principle | KB5124010, OS Build 26100.9546 preview, or a later cumulative update must be installed |
| Windows 11 25H2 | Eligible in principle | KB5124010, OS Build 26100.9546 preview, or a later cumulative update must be installed |
| Windows 10 or an older Windows 11 release | Not a direct 26H2 enablement-package path | The PC must first move through a supported Windows upgrade route |
Microsoft says Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 share a common servicing foundation. That is why 26H2 can be delivered as a relatively small software enablement rather than as a completely separate full operating-system installation.

Before KB5121794 can apply, Microsoft specifies the September 22, 2026 preview update KB5124010, identified as OS Build 26100.9546, or a later cumulative update. A PC that is on 24H2 or 25H2 but missing that servicing level does not meet the documented prerequisite.

How consumers receive 26H2
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install pending updates, including the required servicing update if Windows offers it.
- If Windows 11 version 26H2 is offered, select Download & install.
- Restart when Windows requests it. Microsoft’s documentation says a restart is required to complete the enablement.
The optional setting Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available can make available updates arrive earlier. It does not bypass eligibility checks, phased availability or a safeguard hold.

Why an eligible PC may not see the offer
Phased availability
Microsoft announced general availability on September 29, 2026, but is expanding the release in stages. Two PCs with the same Windows version and servicing level may therefore receive the offer at different times.

Compatibility safeguard holds
Microsoft can prevent Windows Update from offering 26H2 when it identifies a known compatibility problem for a particular hardware or software configuration. A hold is a protection mechanism, not proof that the PC fails Windows 11’s general hardware requirements.

Pending updates or a restart
A required cumulative update may still be waiting to install, or Windows may need a restart before it evaluates the 26H2 offer. Finish ordinary Windows Update activity and restart before treating the absence of an offer as an eligibility failure.
Managed-device policy
Work and school PCs may be controlled by an administrator, servicing policy or deployment ring. In that case, the organization—not the individual user—determines when the package is approved and deployed.

- Windows Update: suitable for devices receiving updates directly from Microsoft.
- Microsoft Update Catalog: useful when administrators need to obtain and approve a specific package.
- Windows Server Update Services (WSUS): configure Product as Windows 11 and Classification as Upgrades.
Commercial and education customers can continue using their existing management and deployment practices. Microsoft also identifies Windows Autopatch and the Microsoft 365 admin center as availability routes for managed environments.

What the general Windows 11 requirements do—and do not—tell you
PC Health Check and Windows Update eligibility checks are useful for determining whether a device meets Windows 11’s broad hardware baseline. They do not guarantee an immediate 26H2 offer. The 26H2 decision additionally depends on the installed Windows release, the KB5124010-or-later servicing level, Microsoft’s rollout stage and any safeguard hold.
Likewise, buying a component, installation media or another physical product is not a supported way to bypass the 26H2 prerequisites. The package is digitally serviced through Microsoft’s update channels.
Known-issue status to check before troubleshooting
Microsoft’s release-health status reported three issues as mitigated on September 29, 2026: USB Audio Class 1.0 devices failing in some modes, a domain-trust issue affecting some Credential Guard-protected accounts, and black-screen or desktop-loading reports in some virtual desktop environments. These statuses can change, so consult the current Windows 11 26H2 release-health information before forcing an installation or diagnosing a blocked offer.
Support period after installing 26H2
For this annual release, Microsoft states that supported Home and Pro editions receive 24 months of support. Enterprise and Education editions receive 36 months. The applicable period depends on the edition installed on the PC.
Quick Recap
A quick eligibility decision
- If the PC runs Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, continue to the servicing check.
- If KB5124010 (OS Build 26100.9546 preview) or a later cumulative update is installed, the documented prerequisite is satisfied.
- If Windows Update offers version 26H2, the device can install it through Download & install.
- If no offer appears, wait for the phased rollout and check for a compatibility safeguard hold or administrator policy.
- If the PC runs Windows 10 or an older Windows 11 release, do not expect KB5121794 to act as a direct upgrade path.
