Other users reported no change. The update is available to eligible devices through a controlled rollout, so the reported reduction is neither universal nor established as a typical result.
What the reported RAM drop means
TechRadar’s October 2026 report relays individual user observations, including one boot reading changing from about 6.9 GB to roughly 4.8–5 GB, another report of around 3 GB less, and a separate report of roughly 1 GB less. Other users said they saw no difference. These examples describe what particular users reported; they are not representative measurements.

No published controlled before-and-after test, representative device sample, or verified population-wide statistic establishes how much RAM 26H2 saves, if any. A change in a user’s reading alone also cannot show that the update caused it. Microsoft’s announcement of 26H2 does not claim a 1–3 GB reduction or describe a mechanism that would produce one. TechRadar’s report and Microsoft’s update announcement are the sources for these claims.
What Microsoft has said about memory efficiency
Microsoft’s March 20, 2026 Windows quality plan names “Improved memory efficiency, lowering the baseline memory footprint for Windows, freeing up more capacity for the apps you run” as an area of work. That is evidence of a broader goal, not a quantified result and not confirmation that 26H2 delivered a particular reduction. Microsoft’s quality plan does not attribute the user-reported figures to 26H2.

How to check whether 26H2 is offered for your PC
Microsoft announced Windows 11 version 26H2 on September 29, 2026. It is available to eligible devices running Windows 11 versions 24H2 or 25H2 as an enablement package. Rollout is controlled and may include compatibility safeguards, so not every eligible PC will necessarily receive the offer at the same time.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and see whether Windows 11 version 26H2 is offered for your device.
- If it is not offered, do not assume the device has a problem: availability may depend on eligibility, rollout timing, or a compatibility safeguard.
These availability details come from Microsoft’s instructions for getting the Windows 11 2026 Update. The announcement highlights quality, reliability, and security improvements, but does not promise a specific memory saving.

How to compare memory readings fairly
If you want to check your own PC, compare readings under similar conditions rather than treating a single boot figure as proof of an update effect. Startup apps, open programs, and the point at which you take a reading can affect the result. Record the reading before and after the update at a comparable point after startup, with the same apps open or closed. A personal comparison can tell you what happened on your machine; it cannot establish a typical result for other PCs or prove the update caused a change.

Should you buy more RAM?
The reports do not establish that 26H2 removes the need for a RAM upgrade, or that every PC will benefit from one. Base that decision on whether your computer remains memory-constrained during your own workload and whether its manufacturer supports an upgrade—not on the largest anecdotal reduction.

Microsoft lists 4 GB of RAM as the minimum requirement for Windows 11 and notes that some PCs below that threshold may have options to add memory. Upgradeability varies by device. Before buying anything, check the exact PC model with its manufacturer or retailer for whether memory is replaceable and the supported memory type and capacity. Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements provide the minimum requirement and direct users to device-specific guidance.
