CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT (bug check 0x00000101) means Windows did not receive an expected clock interrupt from another processor within the allotted time. Microsoft describes the specified processor as not processing interrupts, typically because it is unresponsive or deadlocked. That identifies the failure state—not proof that the CPU is permanently damaged or that any one component caused the crash.
What CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT means
Windows expects processors to respond to clock interrupts. With this stop code, one processor did not respond within the expected interval. Microsoft’s technical description is: “The specified processor isn’t processing interrupts.” The code’s parameters identify the timeout interval, a processor control block address, and the index of the unresponsive processor; they do not, by themselves, name a part that needs replacement. Microsoft Learn’s 0x101 reference is primarily for programmers and discusses debugger analysis of processor states, IRQL, and executing code.

The stop code can occur on Windows 10 or Windows 11. It is a symptom of a processor timeout, not a diagnosis of a failed CPU. The cause on a particular PC cannot be established from the code alone.

Start with clues that can narrow the problem before making hardware decisions. Microsoft recommends reviewing recent changes, Windows’ device and event information, and manufacturer-provided diagnostics where hardware is suspected. Microsoft’s stop-code guidance applies broadly; it is not a guaranteed fix specifically for 0x101.

- Recent changes: Note whether the first crash followed a driver, service, Windows update, or hardware change.
- Startup behavior: Determine whether Windows starts normally or whether you can only reach it in Safe Mode.
- Device Manager: Look for devices marked with a warning and identify any relevant driver.
- Event Viewer: Check for system errors recorded at the time of a crash and look for patterns that coincide with the stop code.
- Hardware diagnostics: If hardware trouble is suspected, use diagnostics supplied by the PC or component manufacturer. If memory errors are a concern, Microsoft also recommends Windows Memory Diagnostics.
- Firmware information: Check the support page for the exact PC or motherboard model to see whether its maker documents a relevant BIOS/UEFI update.
Work through Windows troubleshooting in stages
1. Undo a recent hardware change
If the crashes began after adding hardware, remove that hardware and see whether the stop code recurs. This is a useful first test because it checks a clear change without assuming the processor itself is faulty.
2. Use Safe Mode if normal startup is difficult
If Windows repeatedly crashes during startup, try starting in Safe Mode. It loads only the minimum drivers and services needed to run Windows, which can help you investigate when normal startup is unreliable. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for blue-screen troubleshooting for the available recovery route.

3. Check devices and drivers
Open Device Manager and check for devices with warning indicators. If a relevant device or driver was recently changed, update its driver. If updating does not help, Microsoft’s general stop-code guidance suggests disabling or uninstalling the device as a test. Avoid removing unrelated drivers or devices without a reason, and note what you change so you can restore it if needed.

5. Use System Restore if earlier steps fail
If the problem persists and a suitable restore point exists, consider System Restore to return Windows to an earlier state. Review the restore point and its date before proceeding; it can undo recent system changes.
When hardware or firmware investigation makes sense
If crashes continue after you have checked recent changes and drivers, use the manufacturer’s hardware diagnostics and review the results. A diagnostic failure is more useful evidence of a hardware problem than the stop code by itself. For memory concerns, run Windows Memory Diagnostics as Microsoft recommends.

Firmware updates are specific to the PC or motherboard. Check the manufacturer’s support information for the exact model and follow its instructions; do not install a generic BIOS/UEFI file based only on the error code. Microsoft’s technical 0x101 page was last updated February 24, 2023, and its broader bug-check troubleshooting guidance carries an update date of July 23, 2025. Neither source can determine what failed on an individual machine.

When to seek repair help
Contact the PC maker or a qualified repair professional if repeated crashes continue and you cannot isolate the cause, or if manufacturer diagnostics indicate a hardware fault. Share the stop code, when it started, any recent changes, the Event Viewer findings, and diagnostic results. Those details give support a better starting point than replacing a CPU based solely on 0x00000101.
