Win_add in Alarm Correlation: What the Search Parameter Means

Win_add lets Robust_search account for extra noise alarms while looking for an ordered alarm sequence. Its documented context is a 2002 research paper, not a verified current protocol standard.

Win_add is an allowance for extra noise alarms in the search window used by Robust_search, an alarm-correlation method described in a 2002 paper. It is not established as the name of a standalone network protocol or current industry standard. The parameter lets the method look for an ordered alarm-type sequence even when additional alarms appear between its events.

What Win_add means in the paper

In Intelligent Search of Correlated Alarms from Database Containing Noise Data, Qingguo Zheng, Ke Xu, Weifeng Lv, and Shilong Ma describe Robust_search for finding alarm-correlation rules in databases that contain noise. The paper introduces Win_add as the number of extra noise alarms the search window can accommodate while seeking a target sequence of alarm types. The paper listing and text identify it as a February 2002 conference paper, with DOI 10.1109/NOMS.2002.1015598.

Conceptually, the method searches for the target ordered sequence inside a larger window. The target sequence supplies the base length; Win_add supplies an additional allowance for intervening noise alarms. It is therefore a search parameter governing tolerance for extra events, not a message format or procedure that network devices exchange.

How the extra-alarm window helps

Suppose an alarm database contains events matching an ordered pattern, but unrelated alarms occur among them. A search that required the target events to appear without extras could miss that pattern. With Win_add, Robust_search can consider a wider window and allow some additional alarms while looking for the ordered sequence.

The parameter changes how much noise the search formulation can accommodate. It does not, by itself, identify which alarms are meaningful or prove that a detected relationship is causal.

What the paper reports about larger values

The paper’s abstract reports that, in its experiments on an alarm database containing noise, Robust_search discovered more rules with a bigger Win_add. That is a study-specific reported result, not evidence that increasing the parameter improves outcomes for every dataset or is a recommended setting in current network operations. The available account does not establish numerical gains or how false positives, computational cost, or other measures changed as the value increased.

Related terms in the same method

  • Win_freq: The paper names this separately from Win_add as a measure related to noise data. The available description does not establish enough detail to compare their full roles.
  • Confidence and correlation: The authors say they compared these as interestingness measures for the rules. The reported information does not show that one is superior.

Is “Win Add protocol” a current standard?

The available source supports interpreting “Win Add” as the paper’s Win_add parameter. It does not establish “Win Add protocol” as a formal, independent protocol name, a standards-body specification, or a currently deployed network standard. Use the term in the context of this particular Robust_search method unless a separate, authoritative source establishes another meaning.
