Usually, yes—but only for supported games, and the answer depends on the console model and whether you own a disc or digital copy. Xbox Series X|S runs most Xbox One games plus selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. PS5 runs the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games. Neither platform promises compatibility with every older game, and this guidance does not establish support on any later, unspecified console generation.

Official details: Xbox backward compatibility and PS5 backward compatibility. Catalogs and game behavior can change, so check the individual title before buying, transferring, or relying on a particular feature.

Which Xbox games work on Xbox Series X|S?
Microsoft describes backward compatibility as free for supported titles. The catalog includes Xbox One games and selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games; most Xbox One games are playable, but not every title from those generations is supported. A download is required, including for supported disc games.

For supported games you own digitally, sign in with the account that owns them and look for the titles in Ready to Install. The game must be in the compatibility catalog.

Xbox game discs
On a supported Xbox Series X model with a disc drive, insert the supported game disc to install the game. Keep the disc in the drive when you play: it is needed to verify the game license. Xbox Series S is digital-only, so it cannot play disc-based games.
Older Xbox features and saves
Compatibility does not guarantee that every old online feature remains available. Microsoft says original Xbox Live online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces are not available through backward compatibility. Offline multiplayer and system link may work where the game supports them. Original Xbox saves do not transfer to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S; saves created on newer Xbox consoles can transfer between newer Xbox consoles through the cloud.

Enhancements vary by title
Some compatible Xbox games may render at resolutions up to 4K. Selected titles can use FPS Boost for higher frame rates, while Auto HDR can enhance supported SDR games. These are title-specific options, not upgrades every compatible game receives. Microsoft says features vary by game and reports more than 500,000 hours of testing for backward-compatible gameplay; that is Microsoft’s own testing statement, not an independent comparative assessment.

Which PlayStation games work on PS5?
Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5. Some exceptions are labeled “Playable on: PS4 only” in PlayStation Store. Sony recommends trying a PS4 game before purchasing add-ons for it. Some games may show errors or unexpected behavior, and some PS4 functions may not be available on PS5.

PS4 discs and digital games
To play a PS4 disc, use a PS5 model with a disc drive: insert the disc and leave it inserted while playing. A PS4 disc cannot be used with PS5 Digital Edition. For digital PS4 games, sign in with the account that owns them and open your game library. Sony also supports transferring digital games and game data over Wi-Fi, or using a compatible USB storage drive already used with PS4.
PS3 discs, controllers, and multiplayer
PS5 does not support PS3 discs. A PS4 digital game acquired through the PS3-to-PS4 upgrade program also will not work on PS5 if it still requires the PS3 disc.

For supported PS4 games, DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 controllers work. PS5 games, however, can only be played with DualSense controllers. Older PlayStation functions and peripherals have separate compatibility limits; check Sony’s page for the specific setup. Players on PS4 and PS5 can play together in the same supported PS4 game.
PS4 game enhancements
Some PS4 titles benefit from PS5 Game Boost, which may provide a higher or smoother frame rate. It is not a blanket guarantee of better performance for every compatible game.

Sony’s current support page describes the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games as playable on PS5. Separately, in an October 9, 2020 PlayStation Blog Q&A, Sony executive Hideaki Nishino said that more than 99 percent of the 4,000-plus PS4 games were expected to be playable on PS5 at launch. That was a launch-era estimate, not a promise about all PS4 games today or compatibility with a future console. See the 2020 PlayStation Blog Q&A for the historical statement.
How to verify your own game before switching
- Identify the game’s original platform. Xbox One support does not mean Xbox 360 or original Xbox support; PS4 guidance does not cover PS3 discs.
- Check the exact title. Search Microsoft’s backward-compatibility catalog for Xbox games, or the PlayStation Store and Sony’s PS5 compatibility page for PS4 games and exceptions.
- Match the copy to the console. Xbox Series S cannot read discs; PS5 Digital Edition cannot play PS4 discs. Confirm that a disc drive is present if you own a physical copy.
- Check the feature you care about. Verify online play, save transfer, controller or peripheral support, and any performance enhancement separately. Compatibility with the game itself does not ensure feature parity.
Does this tell us whether games will work on the next generation?
Not for an unnamed future generation. Microsoft’s guidance cited here covers Xbox Series X|S, and Sony’s covers PS5. It does not establish whether games from today’s Xbox or PlayStation consoles will work on later, unspecified hardware. For a future console, rely on its maker’s model-specific compatibility details rather than assuming the current-generation answer will carry over.
