Most everyday Windows apps can run on Snapdragon X Series PCs, but compatibility is not universal. These laptops run Windows 11 on Arm: apps built for ARM64 run natively, while many x86 and x64 apps can run through Microsoft’s Prism emulation. Drivers, specialist utilities, plugins, peripherals, games and anti-cheat systems need separate checks.
How Windows apps run on Snapdragon X Series
There are three main ways an app can work on Windows 11 on Arm: native ARM64, emulation for existing x86 or x64 software, and a hybrid approach for software that combines native and emulated components.

Native ARM64 apps
An ARM64 version is compiled for the processor architecture used by Snapdragon X Series. It runs natively rather than relying on x86 or x64 emulation. If a publisher offers an ARM64 build, it is generally the clearest route to native support.

Microsoft’s Prism emulation lets many existing x86 and x64 user-mode apps run without being rebuilt. Microsoft says that when an app developer submits multiple architectures to the Microsoft Store, Windows chooses an available version; if only an x86 version is submitted, Windows runs it under emulation. That Store behavior does not verify every installer, dependency or configuration a user may encounter. See Microsoft’s Windows on Arm documentation.

Qualcomm says most Windows apps will work through emulation without modification, while recommending that developers port critical components for optimal performance and full compatibility. That is Qualcomm’s platform guidance, not a guarantee that every app will launch or behave correctly. Hybrid apps with ARM64EC
ARM64EC lets developers combine native ARM64 code and emulated 64-bit code in the same process. It can help publishers move critical parts of an app to native execution without converting every component at once. Qualcomm describes this as a developer option; most users do not need to rebuild an app themselves.

What app compatibility does—and does not—tell you
An app opening successfully is only one part of compatibility. Its features, connected devices and background components must also work for your particular use. A software publisher may support one build or version and not another, so check guidance for the exact app and release you rely on.

Apps with demanding or time-critical components are worth checking particularly carefully.
- Plugins and dependencies: A desktop program may rely on third-party libraries, extensions or plugins with different architecture requirements. Confirm support for any add-on that is essential to your workflow.
- Drivers and system-level tools: App emulation is not a driver-compatibility guarantee. Check the PC maker and the peripheral or software publisher for ARM64 driver support, especially for specialist hardware, VPNs, security products and utilities that install system components.
- Peripherals: Confirm that the specific device works with the laptop and has the required Windows on Arm driver or supported connection method. A compatible app alone does not establish peripheral support.
Games and anti-cheat need a title-by-title check
Games can depend on graphics features, drivers and anti-cheat software that are separate from whether the game’s main executable can be emulated. Check the exact game and its required anti-cheat system before relying on it.

In a November 19, 2025 update, Qualcomm said Prism improvements brought AVX and AVX2 support to Snapdragon X Series. The same update reported Fortnite availability with Easy Anti-Cheat support and described ongoing work with other anti-cheat providers. These are dated platform updates, not evidence that all games or anti-cheat systems work.

- Make a list of exact requirements. Include app names and versions, essential plugins, peripherals, games and any security or system utilities—not just the main programs.
- Check each software publisher’s current support guidance. Look for an ARM64 version. If there is none, ask whether the x86 or x64 version is supported under Windows 11 emulation, and verify that the features you need are included.
- Check drivers with the relevant manufacturers. Ask the laptop maker and the makers of your peripherals or system tools about Windows on Arm or ARM64 support.
- Verify games individually. Confirm the title’s graphics requirements and anti-cheat compatibility rather than relying on a general claim about game support.
- Try your real setup if you can. Test the exact software, devices and workflow through your organization’s evaluation process or within a retailer’s return terms. Qualcomm’s Device Cloud is a remote testing resource for developers, not a consumer compatibility certification.
Compatibility can change as apps, Windows, Prism and drivers are updated. Before making a decision based on an older report, check the publisher’s current guidance and install current Windows updates.

How to interpret Qualcomm’s app-usage figures
Qualcomm’s Windows apps page attributes the claim that 93% of total app minutes have native versions to Microsoft research. A separate Qualcomm enterprise article, published January 2, 2025, says 90% of PC minutes run natively, also attributing the statement to Microsoft research. The pages do not establish that the figures share the same date, sample, scope or method. Neither figure is a count of Windows programs, nor does either mean a particular app is guaranteed to work.
The January 2025 enterprise article also says that more than 1,000 apps had been tested, validated and optimized through App Assure since its 2018 launch. That is Qualcomm’s description of the App Assure program, not a count of every Windows app. See Qualcomm’s enterprise article and Windows 11 apps page for the attributed claims.
What to compare when choosing a Windows PC
For a Snapdragon X Series laptop—or any Windows PC—compare the software and hardware you actually depend on, not just a general compatibility label. Check whether each essential app has a native ARM64 version or relies on emulation, whether its demanding features work well enough for you, and whether its drivers, peripherals, plugins and security tools are supported. For games, include the specific anti-cheat system. Also confirm support for the exact laptop configuration with its manufacturer.
