Possibly—but a box that turns on is not necessarily able to show your subscribed channels or use recording and on-demand features. Check the exact model, its connection to your TV, and whether Sky still authorizes the services on your account. Sky’s guidance for certain older Sky HD and Sky+HD models points to Sky Q as an upgrade, but it does not confirm eligibility or price for an individual customer.
What “still works” can mean
There are several separate questions behind whether an old Sky box works:

- Does it power on? This is a basic hardware check, not proof that the service is available.
- Can it connect to your TV? That depends on the ports on both the box and television.
- Can it receive channels? Channel availability depends on the box and its reception setup.
- Can it access your paid Sky services? Subscription authorization and viewing-card status are account matters that a cable or software update cannot restore.
- Do recording and other features work? These depend on the model, software and service support.
Sky’s support guidance reviewed here is for Sky UK. It does not establish the status of every Sky-branded box, every account, or service in other countries.
Find the model before troubleshooting or upgrading
For a Sky+ box, Sky gives this menu path to system details: Services → Settings → Details/System Details. Record the model number and software version before using a troubleshooting guide or contacting support. Sky’s model guidance lists these relevant families:

Sky’s page also lists software versions and says these named models are not HDR-capable. The upgrade listing is model-level guidance, not confirmation that a particular account qualifies or that a specific offer or price is available.
Can an old box work with a new TV?
It may, if the box and television have compatible connections. Check the ports on both devices before buying a cable or adapter, then follow the setup instructions for the exact box. Sky’s Sky+HD manual covers connections and operating states for that generation.

An HDMI connection can solve a physical connection problem when both devices support the connection. It cannot restore a subscription, authorize a viewing card, bring back unavailable channels, or extend provider support.

Try these checks before replacing the box
- Write down the model and software version. On Sky+, open Services → Settings → Details/System Details. Use the model-specific instructions if your menus differ.
- Check the power and TV connection. Confirm the box is receiving power and that the cable is seated in compatible ports on the box and television. Consult the relevant model’s manual.
- Restart or update using Sky’s instructions for your box generation. Sky’s box reset and software-update help describes the applicable steps. A reset may address a box fault; it does not prove that an account or viewing card is authorized.
- Contact Sky if the issue remains or concerns access. Give Sky the model, the symptom and your account details. Missing channels or subscription access require an account and service check, not just a hardware reset.
Does an old Sky box still receive software updates?
Software support varies by model. Sky says Sky+HD and Sky Q boxes update automatically, and manual updating is generally needed only if a box has been switched off for a long time. That statement does not establish the update status of every older Sky+ model. Check Sky’s instructions for your model rather than assuming that a manual update is available or will resolve the problem.

Keep the box, move to Sky Q, or switch to Glass or Stream?
The practical choice depends on what is failing and what your household needs. Sky’s model guidance lists Sky Q upgrades for the Sky HD and Sky+HD families above, but current availability, terms and account eligibility must be checked with Sky. Before changing equipment, consider the delivery method, recording and multi-room needs, package terms and any return requirements. The reviewed guidance does not establish household-specific requirements or current plan terms.
Sky Glass changes what happens to existing equipment: Sky says old Sky equipment, including the box, remotes and multi-screen mini boxes, no longer works after Glass is activated.
