As of October 7, 2026, Microsoft has announced Project Helix as its next-generation first-party Xbox console and says it is “designed to play your Xbox console and PC games.” But that announcement does not say which current games, discs, controllers, or other accessories will work. You’ll need an official Helix compatibility list before you can count on a specific item carrying over.
What Xbox has—and hasn’t—confirmed about Project Helix
In its March 11, 2026 announcement, Xbox described Project Helix as its next-generation console and said it is “designed to play your Xbox console and PC games.” That is a broad statement of intent, not a list of supported titles or hardware.

The announcement does not identify supported Xbox game generations or individual titles. It also does not confirm whether Helix will have an optical disc drive, how digital entitlements will carry over, or which controllers and other accessories will work. So the announcement cannot answer whether your particular Xbox One game, Xbox 360 disc, or headset will be compatible.

Xbox’s backward-compatible games catalog says most Xbox One games work on Series X|S, along with selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. Compatibility is not universal, and available features vary by game. The catalog includes generation filters and an excluded-games list to help check a specific title.

Xbox says more than 500,000 hours of testing went into backward-compatible gameplay and quality standards for Series X|S. That figure describes testing for those consoles; it is not a count of compatible games or a Project Helix test result.
Digital games
If you own a digital game that is included in the Series X|S backward-compatible catalog, Xbox says it appears in the console’s “Ready to Install” area. Xbox describes backward compatibility for eligible games you already own as free on Series X|S; that is the current policy for those consoles, not a Project Helix entitlement or pricing rule.

Disc games
On Xbox Series X, insert a qualifying backward-compatible game disc to begin downloading the game. The disc must remain in the drive to play. Xbox Series S is digital-only and cannot play physical discs. Downloads are required, and supported features vary by game.

Some backward-compatible games on Series X|S have selected enhancements, such as resolution increases up to 4K, Auto HDR for certain older SDR games, or FPS Boost. These features apply only to selected titles and vary by game and console; they are not guaranteed for every older game or for Project Helix.

Xbox also lists specific limits for original Xbox games on Series X|S: original Xbox Live multiplayer and in-game marketplaces are unavailable through backward compatibility. Offline multiplayer is supported when the original game offered it. Original Xbox games do not gain Xbox achievements, and their saves do not transfer to Xbox One or Series X|S. Saves made on Xbox One or Series X|S can move between those consoles through the cloud. These are current backward-compatibility rules, not statements about Helix.

Xbox has established compatibility precedents for Series X|S, but they do not confirm support for Project Helix. In a March 16, 2020 controller announcement, Xbox said it was supporting cross-compatibility between Xbox Series X and Xbox One consoles and controllers. Its Series X|S technology glossary also said Xbox One gaming accessories would work with Series X and Series S. Both statements name those consoles—not Helix.

Those precedents do not establish whether Xbox One or Series X|S controllers, headsets, racing wheels, storage devices, or licensed third-party accessories will work with Helix, or whether they would support all their features. Connector shape or brand alone is not enough to confirm compatibility: connection method, licensing, and device-specific features can matter.

What to check before relying on an old game or accessory
Wait for Xbox’s official Project Helix compatibility information before buying a replacement or assuming an item will work. When a support list is available, check the exact game or accessory and its supported functions—not just its generation or brand.
