As of October 4, 2026, Sony has not confirmed whether PS5 games, accessories, or saves will work on PS6 in the official PlayStation guidance reviewed. That means the answer is unconfirmed—not yes, no, or a reliable prediction. The previous PS4-to-PS5 transition offers useful context, but it is not a promise about PS6.
What Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 precedent does—and doesn’t—tell us
Sony says the PS5 plays the “overwhelming majority” of more than 4,000 PS4 games. That support is broad, but not universal: Sony lists PS4-only exceptions, warns that some PS4 features may be unavailable on PS5, and notes that some games can show errors or unexpected behavior. The exception list can change. PlayStation’s PS4-to-PS5 compatibility guidance describes PS4 games on PS5 only; it does not establish PS5 compatibility on a future console.

Even for supported PS4 games, access can depend on the format and hardware. A PS4 disc requires a PS5 with a disc drive; it cannot be used with a PS5 Digital Edition. Select PS4 games may also receive Game Boost. These details illustrate that backward compatibility can involve exceptions and feature differences, rather than identical access in every case.

Will PS5 games run on PS6?
Unconfirmed. The official material reviewed does not say whether PS6 will play PS5 games, whether every game would work, or whether disc and digital versions would be treated alike. The PS5’s ability to play many PS4 games is a precedent, not evidence of a PS5-to-PS6 policy.

For comparison, Sony says digital PS4 games can be installed from the owner’s account library on PS5, and it documents transfers and compatible USB storage for supported PS4 games and data. Those are PS4-to-PS5 options, not instructions for a PS6.
Will PS5 controllers and other accessories work on PS6?
Unconfirmed. Sony has not established which PS5 controllers or peripherals, if any, PS6 will support. Even on PS5, support depends on the accessory and the game: Sony says PS5 games can only be played with DualSense, while DualSense, DUALSHOCK 4, and officially licensed third-party gamepads work with supported PS4 games. Licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks may work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games. Sony also warns that not all licensed or third-party controllers work.

Other accessory details can matter too. Sony’s PS5 guidance describes headset support by connection type, and original PS VR use on PS5 has specific camera and adapter requirements. These examples show why a future compatibility answer needs to identify the exact device, connection, game, and console model. They do not predict PS6 support. Check the accessory maker’s compatibility information for the particular game and console before relying on a device.

Unconfirmed. Sony’s current transfer guide covers moving data from a PS4 or another PS5 to a PS5; it does not promise that PS5 saves can be imported to PS6. The guide requires the same account on both consoles and a shared network for console-to-console transfer, and warns not to interrupt the process. Supported data and transfer limits differ by source console and when the transfer is started.

For supported PS5 destinations, Sony also documents redownloading digital games from the library, using the relevant game disc, accessing compatible USB extended storage, moving a source PS5 M.2 drive where applicable, downloading cloud saves with PlayStation Plus, and copying PS4 saves by USB. One important distinction: PS5 saves cannot be copied from the PS5 console to a USB drive, so the PS4 USB-save method should not be generalized to PS5 saves. - Keep access to the PlayStation account that owns your games and saves.
- Use Sony’s documented PS5 backup and transfer options for the data types they support; do not assume a PS5 save can be exported to USB.
- Check the exact game’s and accessory maker’s support details rather than treating “PlayStation compatible” as a guarantee.
- Do not buy an adapter, controller, storage device, or game on the assumption that it will work with PS6. No published PS6 compatibility specification in the reviewed sources supports that decision.
- Before making an upgrade or trade-in decision, check Sony’s official PS6 announcements and support pages for current details.
Sony’s July 1, 2026 announcement about ending production of physical discs for new PlayStation-console games starting in January 2028 concerns disc production. It does not establish whether a future PS6 will have a disc drive or play existing PS5 discs. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s announcement should not be read as a PS6 playback specification.
