No Sora revival plan has been announced in the official status information or reporting reviewed here. OpenAI says its Sora web and app experiences ended on April 26, 2026, and its API ended on September 24, 2026. The company’s continued work on world-simulation research for robotics is a research direction, not evidence that the Sora product or API will return.
What happened to Sora?
OpenAI’s Help Center gives separate end dates for the consumer product and developer API: “The Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026,” and “The Sora API will be discontinued on September 24, 2026.” OpenAI’s discontinuation notice is the primary source for these dates.

The dates matter: the web and app shutdown came first, while the API remained available until September. As of the API end date, neither route provides access to Sora.
Has OpenAI said it plans to revive Sora?
No revival plan is established in the official status material or the reporting cited here. That is different from saying OpenAI will never bring Sora back: the available sources do not settle what the company might do in the future.

OpenAI announced Sora 2 on September 30, 2025, describing it as a video-and-audio generation model and social app. The launch announcement’s rollout details were historical; the page now notes that Sora is unavailable as of April 26, 2026. OpenAI’s Sora 2 announcement is not a current availability or relaunch notice.
Does the robotics research mean Sora is coming back?
No. Axios reported that an OpenAI spokesperson said the research team would continue work “to focus on world simulation research to advance robotics that will help people solve real-world, physical tasks.” That report describes continued research, not a commitment to restore Sora as a video-generation service.
The distinction is between a research direction and a product: work on world simulation may continue without the Sora app, website, or API returning.

OpenAI’s Help Center notice sets out shutdown dates and user guidance, but does not give a detailed explanation for the decision. Axios reported that OpenAI was narrowing its focus and human and computing resources, and that Sora used significant compute. Those are reported elements of the context, not a rationale stated in the discontinuation notice.
The shutdown also followed public debate about safety and rights. The Associated Press reported concerns involving nonconsensual images and realistic deepfakes, as well as pressure over generated depictions of public figures. The available reporting does not establish those concerns as the sole or official reason for ending Sora. The AP report also described Disney’s response to OpenAI’s decision to exit video generation and shift priorities.
What happened to the reported Disney arrangement?
The Disney arrangement is not a current partnership or a completed investment. Axios reported plans involving licenses for more than 200 Disney characters and a planned $1 billion investment, then reported that the deal was off and no money had changed hands, citing a source familiar with the situation. These were reported plans that did not proceed as announced; they do not indicate a Sora relaunch.

OpenAI directs users to sora.chatgpt.com/sunset to export their creations. Its Help Center says associated data will be permanently deleted after any final export window, if one is offered, passes, and recommends exporting as soon as possible. Check the official discontinuation notice for the current instructions and any applicable export window.
