Most Nintendo Switch games and some original Switch accessories work on Nintendo Switch 2, but compatibility varies by title and item. Compatible physical and digital games can run on Switch 2, and original Joy-Con and the Switch Pro Controller can connect wirelessly. The original dock, ordinary microSD cards for game storage, and several Joy-Con attachments do not carry over. Which Nintendo Switch games work on Switch 2?
Nintendo says Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but warns that some titles may not be supported or may not be fully compatible. There is no single compatibility percentage that establishes whether your library will work: the answer depends on the game.

Some games receive updates or a Switch 2 Edition upgrade. Nintendo’s Switch 2 transfer guide distinguishes free updates from paid upgrades for selected games; availability and added features depend on the title. An upgrade is not a universal requirement or a benefit every Switch game receives, so check the game’s own listing for what is offered.

Can you use original Switch controllers?
Original Joy-Con and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can connect wirelessly to Switch 2. That does not make them identical to the new system’s controllers: original Joy-Con cannot attach to the Switch 2 console or charge directly from it, and original Switch controllers’ HOME buttons cannot wake Switch 2 from sleep. They also cannot provide Joy-Con 2 features such as mouse controls when a game requires those features.
Which old accessories and system components work?
Compatibility depends on how an item connects, whether it physically fits, its power or charging method, and whether the game supports it. Nintendo’s compatibility table specifies these distinctions:

Joy-Con attachments
Accessories designed to attach to original Joy-Con generally do not fit Joy-Con 2. Nintendo lists these as incompatible with Joy-Con 2: Joy-Con strap, grip, charging grip, wheel, leg strap, Ring-Con, AA battery pack, and two-way charging stand.
Some of these older accessories can still be used with original Joy-Con paired wirelessly for specific games. Nintendo names the Leg Strap with Nintendo Switch Sports and Ring-Con with Ring Fit Adventure. This is a game-specific exception, not general compatibility with Joy-Con 2.

Can you use an old microSD card for Switch 2 games?
No. Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express cards for game storage; a conventional Switch microSD card will not expand that storage. Nintendo says a conventional card can still be used to view screenshots and videos captured on Switch. If you need more Switch 2 game storage, look for a microSD Express card rather than reusing an ordinary microSD card.

Nintendo’s transfer guide says a system transfer can move digital games, certain save data, and settings. Transferred digital games are automatically redownloaded. This does not establish that every save or game-specific feature transfers identically, so check the transfer requirements for the games and data you care about before starting.
