It’s possible, but Microsoft is not ahead today. At the October 6, 2026 close, third-party market data estimated Apple’s market capitalization at $4.87 trillion and Microsoft’s at $3.93 trillion—a gap of about $0.94 trillion. For Microsoft to finish 2027 in front, its market value must grow faster than Apple’s, or Apple’s must fall more. The outcome remains uncertain.
Where the two companies stand
StockAnalysis reported Apple’s market capitalization at $4.87 trillion and Microsoft’s at $3.93 trillion at the October 6, 2026 market close. The difference—about $0.94 trillion—is calculated from those rounded estimates. The same data page listed closing share prices of $333.63 for Apple and $529.30 for Microsoft. StockAnalysis market-cap data are a dated third-party snapshot, not a forecast or an official financial statement.

Market capitalization is the market price of a company’s outstanding shares multiplied by the number of shares outstanding. It changes as share prices and share counts change, so the October 6 figures are a starting point for this prediction, not a standing ranking. Microsoft would need to close the gap through some combination of relative share-price gains and changes in shares outstanding.

Microsoft’s recent growth gives the prediction a plausible foundation. For its fiscal year ended June 30, 2026, the company reported revenue of $331.8 billion, up 18%. Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $214.4 billion, up 27%, while revenue from Azure and other cloud services grew 41%. Those figures come from Microsoft’s FY2026 results announcement and FY2026 annual report.

Cloud growth is evidence of momentum, but it does not by itself show how much future AI and cloud demand will contribute to profits, or how investors will value that growth. A market-cap lead depends on future expectations as well as reported results. Faster revenue growth is therefore a reason to examine Microsoft’s prospects, not proof that it will overtake Apple.
Why Apple could remain ahead
Apple’s latest cited results show that it is not standing still. For the fiscal third quarter ended June 27, 2026, Apple reported revenue of $109.4 billion, up 16%, and diluted earnings per share of $2.02, up 29%. Apple called the quarter a June-quarter revenue and EPS record and reported growth across iPhone, Mac, Services, and geographic segments. CEO Tim Cook said Apple had its “strongest June quarter ever,” with double-digit revenue growth across iPhone, Mac, Services, and every geographic segment. The figures and statement appear in Apple’s July 30, 2026 earnings release.

These Apple figures cover one quarter, while Microsoft’s cited figures cover a full fiscal year. They are not like-for-like measures and should not be used to declare one company the faster-growing business. They do show why an Apple lead cannot be treated as a fixed or easily displaced target: Apple also posted strong results in its latest reported period.
What would make the prediction more or less likely
To assess whether Microsoft is gaining ground, track the valuation gap and the business results that could influence investors’ expectations. Use matching reporting periods where possible, and distinguish actual results from forecasts.

- Starting gap: Compare market capitalizations using the same close date and data method. The October 6, 2026 estimates put Apple ahead by about $0.94 trillion.
- Revenue and earnings: Compare equivalent fiscal periods and note whether earnings figures are GAAP or non-GAAP. The annual Microsoft and quarterly Apple figures cited above do not provide a direct comparison.
- Cloud and AI: Watch whether Microsoft’s cloud growth continues and how it translates into profitability. The reported growth rates establish recent performance, not the durability or future returns of AI-related demand.
- Products and geographic demand: Apple’s latest release reported growth across its major product categories and geographic segments; subsequent results will show whether that continues.
- Margins, investment, and share counts: Earnings reports and calls can show how infrastructure spending, profitability, dilution, buybacks, and dividends are changing. The figures cited here do not quantify how these factors compare between the companies.
- Valuation and expectations: Market capitalization reflects investor expectations about future cash flows as well as current performance. Strong operating growth does not automatically produce a larger market value.
Account for Microsoft’s reporting change
Microsoft’s September 2, 2026 Form 8-K says that beginning in FY2027 it will manage and report performance under two segments: “Agents and Infra” and “Devices and Consumer.” Readers comparing future Microsoft segment results with older reports should account for this reorganization; a changed segment label or grouping does not, by itself, establish a change in underlying business performance. Microsoft could overtake Apple, but the available figures do not establish that it will. Microsoft’s strong FY2026 cloud growth supports the possibility, while Apple’s strong June-quarter results and substantial valuation lead show the scale of the challenge. The prediction can only be judged against market capitalizations near the end of 2027; until then, it remains a forecast, not a fact.
