As of October 5, 2026, PlayStation and Rockstar list the game for current PS5 consoles, but their official pages do not specify a minimum system-software version or confirm support for modified consoles. The announced release date is November 19, 2026, so claims that a jailbreak definitely will—or will not—work go beyond what the companies have published.
What the official platform listings confirm
- PlayStation lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PS5 and PS5 Pro, and says it will not be available for PS4. PlayStation’s game page and FAQ give the announced release date as November 19, 2026.
- Rockstar’s official game page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, also with a November 19, 2026 release date.
Those listings identify supported console families; they do not say whether a PS5 running modified system software is supported. Neither page reviewed specifies a minimum PS5 firmware version or says whether the game will boot or play on a jailbroken console.

Why a jailbreak could matter—and what remains unknown
A jailbreak changes the console’s software state. That makes it different from the standard PS5 platform listed by PlayStation and Rockstar, but the distinction alone does not establish that GTA 6 will reject a modified system.

The key details are still unanswered by the official sources reviewed: the game’s minimum system-software version, whether it will require a newer version to install or launch, and whether game or platform checks will reject a modified environment. Without those details, compatibility with a particular firmware or exploit state cannot be confirmed.

Should you update your PS5 before GTA 6?
Sony’s general PS5 Safety Guide recommends installing the latest system software, saying updates provide additional features, improved usability, and enhanced security. It does not connect that recommendation to GTA 6 or specify a game-required firmware version.
If keeping your jailbreak is the priority, updating could affect your ability to retain it; the sources reviewed do not establish the effect of an update on any particular exploit. If playing GTA 6 is the priority, wait for Sony or Rockstar to publish the game’s system requirements or compatibility guidance before making an irreversible software choice. The available information does not support recommending a specific update now.

Two priorities, neither a confirmed compatibility mode

Single-player does not necessarily mean fully offline
PlayStation describes GTA 6 as a single-player experience. Its listing also says that certain features, content, services, or functions may require an internet connection, Rockstar Games account registration, fees, or gameplay unlocking, and may change or end. That general language does not establish whether launch-day activation, installation, or any specific feature will work offline on a jailbroken PS5. PlayStation also warns that violations of the terms may restrict or terminate access to the game or an online account.

In a June 24, 2026 PlayStation Blog announcement, Mary Yee, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, said GTA 6 “will play best on PS5,” citing DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, the controller’s integrated speaker, Tempest 3D AudioTech, and the PS5 SSD. That is PlayStation’s promotional description of the game’s use of PS5 features—not a published performance test comparing stock and jailbroken consoles.
