No—Google Gemini is not replacing Siri on iPhones in the European Union. Apple and Google announced a technology partnership in January 2026 that puts Gemini models and cloud technology behind some future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri. Separately, Apple says its new Siri AI will not launch on EU iPhones and iPads with iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. That is a delay to Apple’s assistant, not a switch to Google’s.
What Apple and Google actually agreed to
On January 12, 2026, Apple and Google announced a multi-year collaboration. Apple’s next-generation Foundation Models will be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology, and are intended to help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri. Google’s announcement describes model technology supporting Apple products; it does not announce a Google-branded assistant taking Siri’s place.
That distinction matters because an assistant has more than one layer. Siri is the user-facing Apple assistant; Apple Intelligence is Apple’s product and feature framework; and models provide some of the underlying AI capabilities. A Gemini model could help generate or reason through a response while Siri remains the interface. The partnership announcement does not establish that Google controls Siri’s interface, iPhone permissions, or operating-system integration, nor does it say that all Siri requests go to Google.
What Siri AI is—and what is delayed
Apple introduced Siri AI on June 8, 2026, describing a more capable, conversational and personal assistant. It is distinct from the existing Siri that handles familiar iPhone tasks such as calls, messages and email. Apple said Siri AI would not initially be available in the EU on iPhone with iOS 27 or iPad with iPadOS 27. The company gave no public timetable for those devices. It said the feature would be available to EU users on macOS 27 and visionOS 27. These details come from Apple’s June 8 statement. Apple has described the iPhone and iPad rollout as delayed, not permanently cancelled.
This is specifically an EU statement, not a blanket statement about every country in Europe. The United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway and other non-EU markets should not be assumed to have the same availability solely because they are in Europe. Apple’s DMA information identifies the EU-specific changes to its platform.
Why Apple and the European Commission disagree
The dispute is about interoperability and access for competing assistants, not a regulation specifically ordering Apple to install Gemini. Apple says the Digital Markets Act (DMA), as interpreted by the Commission, would require access for competing virtual assistants to private user data and the ability to control installed apps. Apple argues that providing such access raises privacy and security concerns.

The Commission disputes Apple’s account. It has said the decision not to release Siri AI in the EU was Apple’s choice and that Apple had not submitted an acceptable compliant solution. Its public explanation also discusses proceedings involving equal access for third-party AI agents on Android compared with Gemini. - The Gemini app: Google supports Gemini Apps on iPhone and iPad, including voice interaction in the app. Google’s iOS support page documents the app.
The app is a separate destination, not proof that Gemini has become the assistant invoked through the iPhone’s normal Siri controls. Its availability does not establish that it can access or control every app, use all of Siri’s system privileges, or perform every native device action. The available official information does not establish a full system-level Gemini replacement for Siri on iPhone.
Nor does the partnership announcement establish that Google receives every Siri request or unrestricted access to private iPhone data. Apple has not disclosed in that announcement every routing rule, data boundary, model-selection rule or retention policy. Those details should not be inferred from the phrase “based on Gemini.”

Use the existing Siri
The existing assistant remains distinct from the delayed Siri AI release. Apple’s iPhone guide describes Siri functions such as calling contacts, handling messages and email, and sharing onscreen content. Apple Intelligence availability is not all-or-nothing: supported features depend on factors including device, language and region.

Open the Gemini app for a separate AI conversation
Google’s iPhone app is an option for users who want to ask Gemini questions or use supported voice features in a dedicated app. It is not equivalent to hands-free, system-wide Siri access, and its exact features may vary by country, language, device and account.
Use Siri with the ChatGPT extension where supported
Apple already offers an optional ChatGPT extension for some Apple Intelligence requests. The setup path is Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri → ChatGPT → Set Up. Siri can route some requests to ChatGPT, with confirmation controls. This is a useful example of a hybrid arrangement: Siri remains the front end while an external AI service can help with selected requests. Availability depends on the user’s device, language and region. Apple documents the setup in its ChatGPT extension guide.
Do not mistake default-app choices for a Siri replacement setting
EU users have additional default-app options and other DMA-related controls. But those changes do not, by themselves, create a general setting to select any AI app as a drop-in system assistant. Apple’s developer documentation on DMA changes lists expanded default controls without establishing a universal Gemini-for-Siri selector.

What to expect next
The partnership makes Gemini technology part of the story behind future Apple Intelligence, but it does not announce a new default assistant. The immediate EU issue is whether and how Apple will meet the Commission’s interoperability expectations while launching Siri AI on iPhone and iPad. Apple has not announced an EU iPhone or iPad release date, so claims that it will arrive in a particular update—or never arrive—go beyond what the companies and regulators have publicly established.
For readers outside the EU, do not assume that a different country has the same delay or that changing the iPhone’s region will unlock the feature. Availability can depend on more than physical location, including account and language settings, device and software. Check Apple’s current regional availability information rather than treating region switching as a guaranteed workaround.
