Will Flip Phones Still Work? How to Check Before Networks Shut Down

Whether a flip phone keeps working depends on its network support, VoLTE compatibility, carrier, and country—not its form factor.

Not all flip phones are going to stop working. A phone may lose service if it depends on a retired 2G or 3G network, or if it cannot make voice calls over a carrier’s LTE network using VoLTE. The answer depends on your exact phone model, carrier, and country—not on whether the phone folds or displays a 4G or 5G signal.

Why some flip phones may lose service

“Flip phone” describes a design, not the technology inside it. Some flip phones use only older network generations; others support current LTE and VoLTE, and some newer models also support 5G. A phone that depends on 2G or 3G can stop connecting when its carrier retires that network.

Voice calls are a separate compatibility question from mobile data. A handset might show 4G or 5G for data but still rely on an older network for calls if VoLTE—voice over LTE, sometimes labeled 4G Calling or Advanced Calling—is unsupported or not working on that carrier. So a 4G label alone does not establish that the phone will continue making calls.

There is no single worldwide shutdown date

Network retirement happens on different schedules in different countries and on different carriers. These examples show why a date for one provider cannot be applied to every flip phone:

Network or provider Retirement information What it means for a phone owner
UK 2G networks The UK Government says operators will switch off 2G between 2029 and 2033. UK Government guidance Devices that rely only on 2G need upgrading to a 4G- or 5G-capable device to maintain connectivity.
Mint Mobile 2G Mint Mobile lists August 3, 2026, as its 2G shutdown date. Mint Mobile guidance Mint says affected 2G/3G phones and some older 4G phones without VoLTE may lose service, including emergency calling. This is a Mint-specific date.
Cellcom 3G and 2G Cellcom says it retired 3G in 2023 and 2G on December 4, 2024. Cellcom guidance Cellcom identifies phones without VoLTE as potentially affected on its network.
Verizon CDMA Verizon says it completed its CDMA retirement by December 31, 2022. Verizon guidance Its affected device types included 1XRTT CDMA, 3G CDMA, and 4G devices without VoLTE.
Hong Kong networks In a July 24, 2026 notice, the regulator said local providers had ceased 2G; CMHK had ceased 3G on June 30, 2025, and another operator had permission to begin ending 3G from October 9, 2026. Office of the Communications Authority notice The regulator warned that some earlier 4G handsets may not be able to make emergency calls using VoLTE after 2G/3G cessation.

These dates describe the named providers or markets, not a universal cutoff. To get a firm answer, you need the country, carrier, and exact device model.

How to tell whether your old flip phone will still work

  1. Find the exact model and variant. Check the phone’s settings, original packaging, or the label beneath the battery if it has a removable battery. Record the carrier as well as the model number; similar-looking versions can support different network bands.
  2. Run the carrier’s compatibility check. Use the carrier’s device checker or IMEI tool before relying on the phone or buying a replacement. T-Mobile recommends its IMEI Status Check and notes that a device needs to support the network’s frequency bands and technology. T-Mobile compatibility guidance
  3. Confirm VoLTE support and activation. Look for VoLTE, 4G Calling, or Advanced Calling in the phone’s settings, if available. A visible setting is not by itself proof that the carrier supports the exact model; ask the carrier to confirm. Mint Mobile recommends updating software and provides device-setting guidance. Mint Mobile VoLTE guidance
  4. Ask specifically about voice calls after shutdown. Ask whether the exact model can make ordinary calls on the carrier’s network after the relevant 2G/3G retirement. Rogers explains that some 4G/5G phones may still depend on 2G for voice when VoLTE is unsupported. Rogers guidance
  5. Confirm emergency-call support. Ask the carrier whether the exact phone can place emergency calls on its network, especially if it is an older model or uses an early VoLTE implementation. Do not assume that passing a data or general compatibility check proves emergency calling will work.

Could your flip phone still call 911 or 999?

It may not. Emergency calling depends on whether the phone can reach an available network using a technology and calling method supported by that device. When 2G or 3G is retired, a phone that relied on those networks for voice can lose emergency calling as well as ordinary calls. Some older 4G devices may also have VoLTE or emergency-call compatibility problems; Hong Kong’s communications regulator has specifically warned about some earlier 4G handsets after network cessation. Regulator notice

Before relying on an older flip phone, ask its carrier about emergency calls for the exact model and local network. If the phone fails the carrier’s compatibility check or the carrier cannot confirm emergency-call support, arrange a compatible replacement rather than treating it as a dependable emergency phone.

What to check when replacing an incompatible flip phone

If the current handset fails the carrier check, a basic 4G/VoLTE flip phone may be an option. Evaluate the exact model and variant against these criteria:

When to recheck compatibility

Check with the carrier before buying a used or replacement phone, when moving a phone between carriers, and if your carrier announces a network retirement. Compatibility lists and network plans can change; a result for one carrier or model variant does not guarantee service on another.
