DIRECTV’s announced Glance AI feature is designed to bring interactive, personalized screens to supported Gemini devices while they are idle. You do not have to upload a selfie to watch ordinary TV: the face-based experience is an optional AI avatar flow, and Glance says its generative-AI module is off by default.
What is DIRECTV and Glance announcing?
DIRECTV and Glance announced Glance AI interactive content and commerce screensavers for DIRECTV Gemini streaming devices, with a planned rollout in early 2026. The concept turns an idle TV screen into a mix of personalized entertainment, news, shopping and creative experiences. DIRECTV’s announcement describes the partnership, but does not give a final nationwide launch date.

As of the announcement, there is no confirmed firmware version or complete list of eligible regions. Availability may depend on device and region support, so check DIRECTV or Glance’s current guidance rather than assuming every Gemini device will receive it at the same time.
Will DIRECTV put your face in an ad?
Not automatically, according to Glance. The AI-avatar and generative-AI module is off by default and opt-in; using it requires phone or email authentication. If you choose to participate, the reported flow lets you upload a selfie and create an AI avatar. That avatar can then appear in generated scenes and be used to explore styles or products. Glance’s DIRECTV FAQ distinguishes this optional feature from the default interactive wallpaper experience.
So the “face” is an AI-generated representation you choose to create, not a requirement for using DIRECTV or watching regular programming. The available sources do not establish that your unaltered selfie itself is shown on the TV.
How the screensaver and shopping flow work
- Leave a supported Gemini device idle. Ars Technica reported that Glance appears after about 10 minutes of inactivity; that timing is a reported behavior, not a published guarantee for every device or rollout. Ars Technica’s report describes the experience.
- Scan the TV’s QR code. The QR code opens a Glance flow on a phone, where you can authenticate and, if you opt in, upload a selfie to make an avatar.
- Personalize the avatar. Reporting says users can adjust clothing and styles using the remote or voice controls. Glance can place the avatar into generated scenes for exploring looks and similar products.
- Discover a product and continue on another device. Product discovery can use reverse-image matching, but checkout happens on a phone or another device rather than on the TV.
Ars Technica also reported that users can make 30-second AI-generated videos featuring the avatar. That is a described capability, not a guarantee about availability on every device or in every region.

What else can appear on the idle screen?
The announced experiences include lifestyle, travel, health, auto, seasonal and local-trend scenes, alongside real-time weather and sports information. These are intended product features, not independently measured results. The screen is meant to combine personalized visual content with interactive discovery rather than function only as a static wallpaper. Cord Cutters News outlines the announced use cases.
Which DIRECTV devices are covered?
The announced device family includes the DIRECTV Gemini Air, an Android TV USB streaming device supplied to internet customers, and Gemini set-top boxes used with satellite installations. Ars Technica reports that these devices previously used Google wallpaper screensavers. The announcement does not establish that every Gemini model or installation will be eligible at launch.

Can you turn Glance off?
Glance’s FAQ provides instructions for turning the service on or off, subject to device and regional support. That control is separate from opting into the selfie-based avatar feature: you can decline to create an avatar without treating it as a requirement for ordinary TV viewing. For the exact device steps, use Glance’s DIRECTV FAQ, since availability and instructions may vary.
