Yes—AirPods generally work for listening on a flight when the airline permits Bluetooth. Put your phone or tablet in Airplane Mode, turn Bluetooth back on if needed, and use downloaded audio for the most reliable playback. Follow any crew instructions to disable Bluetooth or stow your earbuds.
Can you use AirPods on a plane?
AirPods are Bluetooth earbuds, so they can play audio from a paired phone or tablet during a flight if the airline allows Bluetooth use. The airline and crew set the onboard rules for portable electronic devices; permission can depend on the operator’s procedures. The FAA says devices should be in Airplane Mode, while Bluetooth accessories may still connect when permitted: FAA guidance on portable electronics.

In the United States, the FAA explains that operators may allow portable electronic devices they have determined will not interfere with aircraft navigation or communication systems, and recommends disabling cellular transmission or using Airplane Mode while airborne: FAA Advisory Circular AC 91.21-1D. EASA’s March 2026 Easy Access Rules likewise treat Bluetooth-capable equipment as an intentional transmitter and place passenger device use under the operator’s responsibility and procedures: EASA Easy Access Rules.
How to use AirPods in Airplane Mode
- Pair before departure. Connect your AirPods to your phone or tablet over Bluetooth before boarding, if possible. Apple’s instructions cover AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max: Apple AirPods pairing instructions.
- Turn on Airplane Mode after boarding. This disables cellular service. Apple notes that Bluetooth can still be used in Airplane Mode when the airline allows it: Apple guidance on using Airplane Mode while traveling.
- Turn Bluetooth back on if necessary. If Airplane Mode switched Bluetooth off, enable it again in Control Center or Settings.
- Select AirPods as the audio output. Start downloaded music, podcasts, or video on your device.
- Follow crew instructions. If asked to disable Bluetooth or stow your earbuds, do so.
What works with AirPods during a flight?
Downloaded audio and video
Downloaded music, podcasts, and videos can play from your paired device without cellular service or an internet connection. This is the simplest option when you are unsure whether onboard Wi-Fi will be available.

Streaming over Wi-Fi
Streaming requires an approved connection to the aircraft’s Wi-Fi network and is subject to airline policy. Keep cellular transmission disabled; an onboard Wi-Fi connection does not mean cellular service is permitted.
Seatback entertainment
AirPods connect to a seatback screen only if its entertainment system supports Bluetooth audio and the airline permits pairing. Some systems may require a separate Bluetooth adapter. Check with the airline for your flight rather than assuming the seatback screen will pair directly.

Pairing with non-Apple devices
AirPods can also work as a Bluetooth headset with a non-Apple device, though Siri is unavailable: Apple guidance for using AirPods with non-Apple devices.

AirPods do not make a prohibited cellular call permissible. In the United States, 49 U.S.C. § 41725 prohibits an individual on a scheduled passenger flight from engaging in voice communications using a mobile communications device, with exceptions for crew and federal law enforcement: FAA information on airborne cellular voice communications. Follow the airline’s instructions for any permitted onboard communications service.

What about takeoff and landing?
Use Bluetooth during takeoff and landing only if the airline’s rules permit it, and comply with crew directions whenever they ask you to remove or stow earbuds. The operator’s procedures—not AirPods’ ability to connect—determine when their use is allowed.
