No—not on the evidence available today. AI is changing parts of web design, especially the creation of first drafts, layouts and content, but that is not the same as replacing the people responsible for deciding what a site should do, whether it works for its users and how it should be built. U.S. employment projections still show growth for web and digital interface designers through 2035, while the Bureau of Labor Statistics cautions that AI and improving tools may soften that growth.
What “replace” means in web design
AI can automate or accelerate particular tasks without eliminating the occupation. A site generator may produce a starting layout or draft copy; a designer’s broader work can include understanding the problem, shaping an interface around user needs, testing usability and coordinating with development colleagues. The practical question is therefore not simply whether AI can make a web page, but which parts of the job it can handle and who remains accountable for the result.

O*NET describes web and digital interface designers as designing and testing interfaces to facilitate human-computer interaction and usability, with an aesthetic focus. It also lists collaboration with web development professionals. Those responsibilities go beyond producing a visual draft. O*NET: Web and Digital Interface Designers
What employment projections say—and what they don’t
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment in the combined category of web developers and digital designers to grow 5% from 2025 to 2035, faster than the 3% projected for all occupations. Within the combined category, its projections are 6% growth for web and digital interface designers and 4% for web developers. The BLS table reports 220,100 people employed in the combined group in 2025 and projects 231,400 in 2035. These are U.S. projections, not a global forecast or a measurement of AI’s effect in isolation. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics: Web Developers and Digital Designers

The BLS says expanding e-commerce is expected to support demand, while warning: “However, improving web development tools and increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) for web development may soften the employment growth of these workers.” That is a qualified warning about possible slower growth—not a prediction that the occupation will disappear. The figures combine developers and designers for some measures, so they should not be read as a precise forecast of how many design jobs AI will create or remove.
Which parts of the workflow AI can assist with
Current vendor documentation shows AI being used to create or assist with site drafts, responsive layouts, content and design changes. These examples illustrate changing workflows, not independently verified replacement of professional designers.
- Wix Harmony: Wix documents AI tools for site creation and related design work. It tells users to review the AI agent’s suggestions or changes before finalizing a site. That establishes a review step in its documented workflow, not how often a correction is needed or how well the output performs. Wix Harmony: Using the AI Agent
- Webflow AI: Webflow says its AI features can generate responsive sites, help create contextually relevant copy and let users adjust generated designs. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent evidence of design quality or job replacement. Webflow AI
- Figma’s AI web-design workflow: Figma describes a process in which a designer can connect a codebase, make changes and bring work into team review. It is an example of AI becoming part of a design workflow, not proof that the full workflow is automated. Figma AI
Why human judgment still matters
A generated interface is an output, not evidence that the site solves the right problem. Someone still needs to decide what users need to accomplish, judge whether the layout and content support those tasks, test whether the interface is usable and communicate decisions to the people implementing it. O*NET’s description of design, usability testing and collaboration helps explain why the work cannot be reduced to generating a page.
AI may lower the effort needed to create a basic draft, and tools may let people outside design roles handle some basic development tasks. That can put pressure on routine production work. It does not by itself establish whether professional demand will rise or fall overall; demand also depends on how much organizations need websites and digital interfaces, including in e-commerce.

How web designers can adapt
Workplace skill needs are changing alongside AI adoption. The International Labour Organization’s 13 August 2026 report describes greater attention to cognitive, socioemotional, digital and AI skills, as well as adaptability, resilience and human agency. This is broad labor-market context, not a survey or forecast specific to web designers. International Labour Organization: Generative AI and Jobs
For designers, the useful response is to treat AI as one part of the workflow while strengthening the work around it: defining user and business needs, evaluating drafts, testing interfaces, and collaborating effectively with developers and other stakeholders. The ability to make and explain sound design decisions matters more than simply producing a first version quickly.

What this means for people choosing web design
The available evidence does not support treating web design as a career that is about to vanish. It does point to a changing division of labor: some tasks may become easier to automate or may be performed by people using AI tools, while the occupation’s usability, testing and collaboration responsibilities remain important. The employment outlook cited here applies to the United States and does not isolate AI’s contribution; it cannot guarantee the prospects of a particular designer, employer or country.
