Possibly—but the clearest risk is tighter supply and fewer attractive low-cost configurations, not a guaranteed price rise or disappearance of every budget phone. AI data centers use large amounts of server memory, and suppliers are prioritizing those products. That leaves mobile DRAM allocations tight and raises costs that phone makers must absorb, pass on, or manage by changing device configurations. TrendForce says those pressures are weighing on smartphone production, but its industry outlook does not establish that all budget phones will become more expensive or vanish from stores.
How AI data centers affect phone memory
AI servers rely on high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and server DRAM. When manufacturers prioritize capacity for those products, less supply may be available for other memory categories, including the mobile DRAM used in smartphones. TrendForce says server-product prioritization kept mobile DRAM allocations tight in its fourth-quarter 2026 outlook, alongside rising costs and depleted low-cost inventories that weigh on phone production. This is an allocation and cost-pressure story, not a case of phones and AI servers necessarily using identical memory products. The pressure can spread across a constrained manufacturing base as suppliers decide which products and customers to prioritize. AI infrastructure also adds storage demand: TrendForce projected enterprise SSD bit demand to grow by more than 80% year over year in 2026. That figure concerns enterprise storage, not smartphone memory or phone shipments. TrendForce, September 30, 2026
Why budget phones are especially exposed
Memory is only one part of a phone’s bill of materials, but low-cost devices have less room to absorb component increases without affecting margins. TrendForce says high mobile-memory costs are difficult for brands to absorb and that low-end memory configurations are being reshaped. Manufacturers can respond by changing how much memory a phone has, adjusting software and system architecture to use memory more efficiently, or shifting product mix toward devices with different margins. Those choices can make the cheapest versions less compelling even if a model remains on sale. A manufacturer might preserve a familiar price by offering less memory or storage, reserve a more generous configuration for a higher-priced model, or reduce production of a low-margin device. Which response makes sense depends on the brand, model, contracts, inventories and local demand.
Memory forecasts are not forecasts of phone prices
Analyst forecasts point to significant memory-cost pressure, but they should not be read as equivalent increases in the retail price of a smartphone.
| Forecast | What it measures | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Gartner forecast DRAM annual prices to rise 125% and NAND flash annual prices to rise 234% in 2026; it did not expect meaningful pricing relief until late 2027. | Memory component prices in Gartner’s April 8, 2026 forecast. | A 125% or 234% increase in phone prices. Gartner |
| TrendForce projected conventional DRAM contract prices to rise 10–15% quarter over quarter in 4Q26, and NAND Flash contract prices to rise 15–20%. | Quarterly contract-price movement for memory, in TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 forecast. | The retail price change for any particular phone. TrendForce |
| TrendForce estimated the 2026 DRAM sufficiency ratio at approximately -1% to -2% and said the supply-demand gap was expected to widen further in 2027. | Industry-wide DRAM supply relative to demand, in TrendForce’s July 30, 2026 estimate. | A forecast of how many budget phones will be available in a given country. Phone prices also depend on contracts, existing inventories, currency, taxes, retailer pricing, demand and a company’s product strategy. A change in component cost can be absorbed, offset elsewhere, or passed on only in some models or markets. The cited forecasts describe memory markets; they do not provide a country-by-country prediction for budget-phone prices.

DRAM and storage have different outlooks
“Memory” covers components with different jobs and supply conditions. Mobile DRAM, typically LPDDR, supports active tasks; NAND flash, commonly paired with UFS storage in phones, holds apps, photos and other data. Their outlooks are not interchangeable.

These are forecasts, not guarantees of what a shopper will find. A phone’s RAM and storage can also be affected by different component costs and product decisions.
Why this does not mean budget phones are about to disappear
Market-wide pressure is real, but it is not proof that every inexpensive phone will be discontinued or that every shopper will face a higher sticker price. TrendForce describes expected effects on production and consumer demand, not live retailer stock or a list of models being withdrawn. Availability will vary by model, market and time. Supply also continues: Micron reported a high-volume ramp of 16Gb LPDDR5X at a leading smartphone OEM and said it was sampling a 24Gb LPDDR5X product to multiple phone customers. That company disclosure shows ongoing mobile-memory production; it does not negate broader allocation pressure or establish what any particular phone will cost. - Total price and stock in your country: Store prices and availability are local and can change independently of component forecasts.
- RAM and storage in the exact configuration: Two versions of a phone can differ substantially; check the listing’s specifications rather than relying on the model name alone.
- Software support: A low sticker price is less useful if the support period does not fit how long you plan to keep the phone.
- Whether the cheaper configuration meets your needs: Consider your typical apps, multitasking and storage use before trading capacity for a lower price.
