First, confirm the error code and laptop model
The report behind this question describes an HP EliteBook 840 G5 showing “F30.” HP’s support instructions cover a related error displayed as “3F0 Boot Device Not Found or Hard Disk Error.” The available information does not establish that F30 and 3F0 are interchangeable on every HP PC, so record the exact on-screen code and use the support guidance for your model.

The reported SSD appeared in BIOS and passed HP’s UEFI diagnostic, and Windows booted when Secure Boot was disabled. Those details help narrow the investigation, but they come from an individual forum report—not a confirmed diagnosis. A detected drive or a passing diagnostic does not rule out every storage, boot, or firmware problem.
What a clean install can—and cannot—fix
A clean installation replaces Windows and its boot files. It may resolve startup trouble caused by damaged system files or boot configuration data. It is not a general repair for every fault that prevents a PC from starting.

- Possible Windows startup damage: Startup Repair or, if necessary, reinstalling Windows may help.
- Drive failure or detection trouble: A reinstall is unlikely to solve the underlying hardware problem. If HP’s drive test reports failure, prioritize data recovery and hardware service.
- Secure Boot rejection: If the machine fails with Secure Boot enabled but starts with it disabled, investigate UEFI settings, the boot manager, and firmware trust certificates. Windows 11 Pro is not established as a fix for this condition.
Microsoft warns that a clean install removes personal files, apps, device customizations, and settings. Back up what you can before proceeding. A USB flash drive can be used to create Windows installation media, but having installation media does not make a reinstall appropriate for every cause.
Check the drive and firmware before reinstalling
- Record the evidence. Note the full HP model, exact error text and code, BIOS version, whether the SSD appears in firmware, and the result of HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
- Run HP’s UEFI storage test. HP’s guidance for the related 3F0 error starts with drive diagnostics. If the test reports a failure, stop before wiping or reinstalling Windows and address the drive and any needed data recovery.
- Restore BIOS defaults. If the drive is detected and passes, HP recommends restoring BIOS defaults. Then check that the intended UEFI boot mode is active and that Windows Boot Manager is available. Change one firmware setting at a time so you can tell what affects startup.
- Try Startup Repair if Windows Recovery Environment is available. Microsoft says Startup Repair can attempt to correct startup problems such as damaged system files and boot configuration data. It cannot prove that hardware or firmware is healthy, nor repair every such fault. See Microsoft’s Startup Repair instructions.
- Reinstall only if the evidence points to Windows. If recovery tools do not resolve a Windows startup problem, use current official Microsoft installation media or HP Cloud Recovery, following the instructions for the exact model. Choose an edition supported by the device and license; the available evidence does not show that Pro specifically fixes this error. If it boots with Secure Boot off but fails with it on
That pattern points toward a Secure Boot or boot-manager issue worth investigating separately from Windows edition. Secure Boot checks boot software signatures against certificates trusted by UEFI firmware. Microsoft describes Secure Boot as a feature that helps prevent malicious software from loading when a Windows PC starts.

Do not assume this pattern proves that a certificate is the cause, and do not repeatedly reset Secure Boot keys or leave Secure Boot disabled without a recovery plan. Microsoft’s Secure Boot troubleshooting guide explains that resetting Secure Boot to firmware defaults can clear firmware trust databases; on some systems, that can remove certificates needed for a newer signed Windows Boot Manager. Follow current HP guidance for the specific model and Microsoft’s recovery instructions for the relevant scenario.

Certificate updates are relevant context, not a diagnosis of this HP report. Microsoft says the 2011 Secure Boot certificates begin expiring in 2026: Microsoft Corporation KEK CA 2011 on June 24, Microsoft UEFI CA 2011 on June 27, and Microsoft Windows Production PCA 2011 on October 19. Replacement certificates include Microsoft Corporation KEK 2K CA 2023, Microsoft UEFI CA 2023, and Windows UEFI CA 2023, respectively; Microsoft also lists Microsoft Option ROM UEFI CA 2023 for a distinct trust purpose. Microsoft says devices without the newer certificates continue to start normally and receive standard Windows updates, but over time lose new early-boot security protections. HP’s official sequence for the related 3F0 error is to test the drive, restore BIOS defaults, and then proceed to HP Cloud Recovery or Windows reinstallation as appropriate. A clean install is therefore a later option—not a guaranteed cure for an F30 message.
