Will a BIOS Update Fix Your PC’s Stability Problems?

A BIOS update may fix crashes or freezes when its release notes address a relevant firmware, microcode, or compatibility issue. Check the exact model and follow its update precautions.

Yes—a BIOS update can improve stability when it fixes a firmware bug or delivers a relevant processor microcode, compatibility, or power-management change. It is not a universal fix: check the release notes for your exact computer or motherboard and look for a change tied to your symptoms or hardware before updating.

When can a BIOS update improve stability?

The BIOS (or UEFI firmware) helps initialize and manage hardware. A firmware defect or outdated processor microcode can contribute to crashes, freezes, or boot trouble. A vendor may address such a problem in a BIOS release. Dell, for example, says its BIOS updates can include fixes for known stability issues. That makes an update a plausible remedy when its notes identify a relevant fix—not a diagnosis or cure for every unstable PC. Dell’s BIOS update guidance describes why and how to update.

Will updating BIOS fix crashes? A documented example

Intel’s 13th- and 14th-generation desktop processor Vmin Shift instability illustrates a targeted firmware fix. In a September 25, 2024 update, Intel identified multiple contributing factors, including motherboard power delivery beyond Intel guidance, microcode behavior at high temperatures, and elevated voltage requests. Intel said microcode 0x12B addressed elevated voltage requests during idle or light activity, incorporated earlier 0x125 and 0x129 updates, and had to be delivered through a BIOS update by system and motherboard manufacturers. This applies to affected processor and system combinations; it does not establish that a BIOS update will fix unrelated crashes. Intel’s technical update explains the issue and mitigation.

Intel also reported that, in its specified productivity and game tests on an i9-14900K with particular reference-board and memory configurations, performance with microcode 0x12B was within run-to-run variation compared with 0x125. That is a bounded vendor comparison, not a universal performance or stability guarantee. Intel’s processor update gives the tested context.

Why release notes and the exact model matter

BIOS files and release histories are specific to a computer or motherboard model. Before deciding, confirm the exact model and installed BIOS version, then use that model’s official support page. A release note for a different board—even one with a similar name or processor—does not show that its fix applies to your system.

ASUS’s PRIME H610M-K ARGB history shows how specific the notes can be. BIOS 3601, dated December 12, 2024, lists microcode 0x12B to address elevated voltage requests during idle or light activity and further mitigate Vmin Shift instability. BIOS 3801, dated May 28, 2025, lists microcode 0x12F to further improve system conditions that may contribute to that instability. BIOS 4004, dated July 7, 2026, says “Improve system’s stability.” These entries describe that board’s firmware history, not an update recommendation for other hardware. ASUS’s PRIME H610M-K ARGB BIOS page lists the versions and notes.

Should you update BIOS if your PC is unstable?

Use the following checks to decide whether an update is relevant and whether you can follow the vendor’s procedure safely:

  1. Identify your hardware and current firmware. Check the computer or motherboard’s exact model and the installed BIOS version in the manufacturer’s instructions or firmware setup.
  2. Open the official support page for that exact model. Do not use firmware intended for another model.
  3. Match the release notes to the problem. Look for a fix tied to your crashes, freezes, boot issues, processor, memory, storage, security exposure, or compatibility needs. If the notes do not relate to your situation, a newer version alone is not evidence it will improve stability.
  4. Check update conditions before proceeding. Read prerequisites, beta status, the manufacturer’s update method, and notes about bundled firmware or rollback limits.
  5. Prepare according to the vendor’s instructions. Back up important data, use stable power, and follow the manufacturer’s encryption or recovery-key guidance. Use only the correct model’s firmware and do not interrupt the update.

When comparing two versions, weigh the relevance of the fix alongside compatibility, security changes, prerequisites, bundled firmware changes, beta status, rollback limits, and the supported update method. If you decide to update, follow the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s instructions rather than improvising a procedure.

Can a BIOS update cause problems?

Yes. An interrupted update can affect system stability, even if interruptions are uncommon. Dell advises backing up data, keeping a laptop connected to AC power, closing programs, disconnecting external devices, and suspending BitLocker protection before an update; re-enable it afterward. If BitLocker is not suspended, Windows may ask for the recovery key after restart. Dell’s steps are for Dell systems, and procedures vary by model. Dell’s update guide covers these precautions.

Do not assume a downgrade will undo every change. ASUS notes that on the PRIME H610M-K ARGB, the Intel Management Engine version remains updated even if the BIOS is rolled back. That limitation is specific to the cited board, but it shows why rollback guidance matters before updating.

  • Store more with capacities up to 8GB (1 gigabyte (GB) = 1 billion bytes. Some capacity not available for data storage.)

What if the PC is still unstable afterward?

A relevant BIOS update may remove one firmware-related cause without resolving other causes. If the crashes or freezes continue, the available vendor information does not establish that another BIOS update will diagnose or repair the problem. Recheck the symptom and its timing, consult the exact model’s support guidance, and investigate other possible causes rather than repeatedly flashing firmware without a relevant release note.
