To use Widgetsmith, first build and name a widget in the app, add a Widgetsmith widget of the matching size to your iPhone or iPad Home Screen, then tap it and select your named design. You can customize its content and appearance, or add a supported widget to the Lock Screen. Here’s how to set it up and fix common problems.
How to create a widget in Widgetsmith

Open Widgetsmith and choose a widget size, or create a new widget. The available choices depend on the device and software version.

Choose the widget’s content, such as a clock, date, photo, or countdown, then set its appearance.

Give the widget a recognizable name. You’ll use that name to find it after placing a Widgetsmith widget on your Home Screen.

How to add a Widgetsmith widget to the Home Screen
Apple’s documented iPhone flow is to touch and hold the Home Screen until the icons jiggle, tap Edit, then Add Widget. Find Widgetsmith, choose a size, and tap Add Widget. [Apple’s iPhone widget guide]
Once the widget is on the Home Screen, tap it and select the custom widget you named in Widgetsmith. If you have several designs in the same size, select the one you want displayed. [Widgetsmith’s setup FAQ]
How to customize a widget’s look
In Widgetsmith, select a theme and adjust options such as the background, font, tint, border, and artwork. You can apply a style to the current widget or reuse it for future widgets. The FAQ also describes saving up to six personalized colors. [Widgetsmith’s FAQ]

Ideas for what to put in a widget
Choose content based on what you want to see or do at a glance. Widgetsmith’s US App Store description lists the following examples; availability may vary by app version, device, and subscription tier. [US App Store listing]

Quick information: clocks, dates, weather, time zones, activity and step counts, countdowns, and solar or lunar information.

Personal photos: show one selected photo or an album. The FAQ says album images change through the day; you can choose and position an image before saving the widget.

A coordinated look: use themes, custom colors, or the wallpaper collection described in the listing to coordinate your widgets with your screen.
Consider the available space and placement as well as the content: a Home Screen widget may offer a different size or shape from a Lock Screen widget, and some content may need permission to work. Check the app’s current options for the widget you’re creating.

How to add a Widgetsmith widget to the Lock Screen
Apple supports Lock Screen widgets on iOS 16 and later. Hold the Lock Screen, tap Customize, then tap Add Widgets. Widgetsmith’s App Store listing describes Lock Screen customization, but the available widget types can differ by app and device version. Widget choices depend on the platform and software version. Widgetsmith’s FAQ describes small, medium, and large Home Screen sizes on iOS, plus extra-large support on iPad and version-specific extra-large guidance for iPhone. The US App Store listing states these minimum operating-system requirements: iOS 15.0 or later for iPhone, iPadOS 15.0 or later for iPad, macOS 12.0 or later on an Apple M1-or-later Mac, and visionOS 1.1 or later for Apple Vision. Is Widgetsmith free?
Widgetsmith says most features are free and Premium is optional, adding features and removing ads. The FAQ gives weather data and custom themes as examples of Premium features. It lists monthly and annual plans and a seven-day trial, but prices and availability can vary by region and change. Fix common Widgetsmith problems
Widgetsmith is missing from the widget chooser
If you have installed the app but cannot find it when adding a widget, Widgetsmith’s FAQ recommends restarting the device. This may help, but it is not a guarantee. [Widgetsmith’s FAQ]
The widget shows a grey box
Check that the custom widget it was meant to display still exists in Widgetsmith. Then edit the placed widget and choose a valid configuration. [Widgetsmith’s FAQ]

You want to show a GIF or video
Widgetsmith’s FAQ says iOS does not allow animated GIFs or video content in widgets. Use a static image instead. [Widgetsmith’s FAQ]
You want to change another app’s icon
