Check flex eligibility first, then weigh receptions, carries, targets, yardage and touchdown chances, along with current injury and role news. Without the player names, league settings and week, there is no defensible pick between two specific candidates.
Check your flex rules and scoring first
Flex eligibility and scoring are league settings, not universal rules. Confirm which positions your flex accepts and whether receptions score points before comparing players. The NFL’s 2025 official rules search result lists an RB/WR flex slot, but fantasy platforms and individual leagues can use different settings. NFL Fantasy documents its scoring options on its scoring settings page.

In PPR, each reception adds value, so a back who catches passes or a receiver who earns frequent targets may have an advantage. In standard scoring, receptions do not earn points, making yardage and touchdowns relatively more important. Half-PPR falls between those formats: receptions matter, but less than in full PPR.

#1 Best Overall
- Running back: Consider expected carries, receiving targets and catches, plus the player’s chances to gain yards or score. A back with a meaningful receiving role benefits more from PPR scoring than one whose production depends mainly on rushing.
- Wide receiver: Consider expected targets, likely catches, yardage and touchdown opportunity. Targets are useful evidence of opportunity, but they are not guaranteed receptions or points.
- Both: Check availability and role changes, then compare the candidate-specific projections available to you. An injury, changed workload or other late news can make an earlier comparison outdated.
NFL Fantasy Managing Editor Graham Barfield wrote that “we’re chasing targets when it comes to receivers and tight ends, no matter if you play in standard or PPR leagues.” His point is that target opportunity matters across formats; PPR adds a direct scoring bonus for receptions.
What historical positional averages can—and cannot—tell you
In NFL.com’s article “Rule Change coming to NFL Fantasy Football,” Graham Barfield reported that, across the six seasons covered, WR25–WR36 averaged 2.3 more PPR fantasy points per game than RB25–RB36. In standard scoring, RB25–RB36 averaged 0.4 more points per game than WR25–WR36. These are historical averages for positional groups in that article—not current-season results, projections, or a rule that an individual receiver or back will outscore the other.

Make the weekly decision
- Confirm eligibility and scoring: Check your league’s roster settings and scoring rules so both players are eligible and you know how receptions count.
- Compare expected roles: Look at each player’s anticipated carries, targets and receiving work, rather than relying only on position or season-to-date totals.
- Check scoring opportunities: Consider expected catches, yardage and touchdown chances under your format.
- Recheck late updates: Review injury and role news close to kickoff, then refresh candidate-specific projections. NFL Fantasy describes its Best Available feature as using projections and showing projected point differences for starter or bench use; that is a platform feature, not an independent guarantee of the better choice. Learn more on its Best Available support page.
NFL Fantasy also notes that official game statistics can be reviewed and changed, and that scoring changes can affect matchup results. Final fantasy scoring may therefore be subject to official stat corrections.
