If you want more natural-looking proportions, close-up details, or one lens that covers several kinds of shots, a standard zoom is often the more flexible choice. Your camera format, lens mount, viewpoint, and the photograph you want matter more than the lens label alone.
Which lens is better for a cramped abandoned interior?
A wide-angle lens captures more of the scene from the same camera position, making it useful when a room is tight or you cannot safely move farther back. Canon lists interiors as a wide-angle use, and Nikon also recommends wide-angle lenses for interiors, architecture, and confined situations (Canon’s wide-angle lens guide; Nikon’s lens guide).

For a room-wide composition, begin at the wide end of a compatible zoom and check the edges of the frame. A wider view can help show how a doorway, corridor, or foreground object relates to the rest of the room. It does not, by itself, make a photograph brighter or guarantee that the entire room will look attractive.

Wide-angle framing can make a narrow room feel more spacious and emphasize depth. Objects close to the camera may look larger relative to objects farther away, so placing a chair, doorway, or other foreground feature near the lens can make it dominate the composition. This is a perspective effect shaped by viewpoint and framing, not an inevitable flaw in every wide-angle lens (Nikon’s lens guide; Cambridge in Colour’s wide-angle lens explanation).

Your camera's lens thread size will be marked somewhere on the lens barrel or printed underneath your lens cap. This number is always preceded by a ''Ø'' (diameter) symbol. For example: Ø58 = 58mm lens thread size.
Building lines can also look more dramatic when you photograph from close up or tilt the camera. Keep the camera level when preserving straight architectural lines is important. If you can move back without creating a safety or access problem, a less wide angle of view may produce proportions that feel less exaggerated. Canon advises stepping farther back and using an angle closer to standard when minimizing distortion in exterior architecture (Canon’s wide-angle lens guide).
When is a standard zoom the better choice?
Choose a standard zoom when you want to move between a room view and tighter compositions without changing lenses, or when natural-looking proportions matter more than fitting in every wall. Standard lenses generally give a familiar angle of view and less pronounced wide-angle effects, according to Canon and Nikon (Canon’s standard lens guide; Nikon’s lens guide).

- Ultra-wide-angle zoom lens opens the door to creative wide-angle video and still imagery for Canon EOS APS-C camera users.
- Focal range of 10-18mm (16-29mm equivalent) is great for shooting in tight spaces so the subject and background can be captured in a single frame.
- Wide angle of view works beautifully for vlogging and selfies without the need of a long selfie stick.
- Completely new optical design, optimized for mirrorless — outstanding image quality throughout the image, from center to periphery
- Maximum magnification of 0.23x in AF mode and 0.5x in MF mode for impressive close-up video and still images of small objects.
A standard zoom can frame details such as a broken window, peeling paint, or an object on a workbench more tightly without requiring you to move as much. Its actual focal-length range varies by lens and camera format, however, and its wide end may not be wide enough for a small room.

Compare the trade-offs
| What matters | Wide-angle lens | Standard zoom or standard focal length |
|---|---|---|
| Fitting a whole room | Often a better starting point when you cannot step back. | May require more room to move away from the scene. |
| Perspective | Can emphasize depth and make nearby objects appear prominent. | Usually gives a more familiar, less pronounced perspective. |
| Architecture | Close viewpoints and camera tilt can make lines feel more dramatic. | Useful when less exaggerated proportions are the priority. |
| Details and framing options | Can include environmental context around nearby details. | A zoom range can frame details and wider views without changing lenses; the range depends on the lens. |
| Low light | A wider view does not itself make the exposure brighter. | Some standard lenses have large apertures; compare the actual aperture and stabilization. |
| Compatibility | Must match the camera’s mount and sensor format. | Must match the camera’s mount and sensor format. |
Check camera format and mount before choosing
A focal-length number alone does not tell you how wide the lens will look on your camera; sensor format affects the field of view. Nikon lists different approximate wide-angle ranges for FX and DX cameras (Nikon’s lens guide). Before buying, check that the lens fits your camera mount and confirm how its field of view works with your sensor format. Since the camera system and budget are unspecified, there is no responsible basis here for recommending one exact lens model or focal-length range.

Those mine-specific warnings should not be read as a claim that every abandoned building has the same hazards. These figures describe the NPS inventory, not abandoned buildings generally.
