A Wi-Fi smart plug lets you switch power to a compatible plug-in device using an app, schedule, automation, or supported voice assistant. Whether it works in your home depends on the plug’s Wi-Fi requirements, its compatibility with your smart-home platform, and the electrical limits of both plug and appliance.
What a Wi-Fi smart plug actually does
A smart plug sits between a wall outlet and a plug-in device. After setup, it switches power to that device when you use the app or a supported smart-home control. Depending on the model, it may also support schedules, away routines, voice commands, or energy monitoring.

It does not make every appliance smart: it controls the power supplied through the plug. What an appliance does when power returns depends on that appliance, so do not assume a plug can remotely operate all of its functions.
Will it connect to your Wi-Fi?
Check the exact model’s network requirements before buying. Some plugs require a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and will not connect to a 5 GHz-only network. For example, TP-Link’s Kasa setup guide, last updated April 17, 2026, says the covered plug requires 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and does not support 5 GHz: TP-Link Kasa setup guide. TP-Link also specifies 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for its TP15: TP-Link TP15 specifications. These are product-specific requirements, not rules for every smart plug.

Setup can require more than Wi-Fi. In the Kasa guide’s process, you use the Kasa app, sign in to a TP-Link account, connect your phone to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and plug in the device. TP-Link notes that on iOS 14 and later, the Kasa app needs Local Network access during setup. The TP15 also supports Bluetooth for setup. Other brands and models may have different onboarding steps, so follow the instructions for the product you choose.
Will it work with your assistant or smart-home platform?
Compatibility is model-specific. Check the product’s official listing for the platform you use, rather than relying on a general claim that smart plugs work with voice assistants. TP-Link lists its TP15 as Matter-certified and compatible with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung SmartThings: TP-Link TP15 specifications.

Check the electrical rating before plugging in an appliance
Match the smart plug’s voltage, current, and wattage limits to the device you intend to use. Pay particular attention to appliances with motors or other loads for which the manufacturer provides a separate limit. Never treat one model’s rating as the standard for the whole category.

For a concrete example, TP-Link lists the TP15 at a maximum of 15 A / 1800 W at 120 V for general or resistive load. That is the specification for that model, not a universal rating: TP-Link TP15 specifications.
Do not plug a power strip or extension cord into a smart plug. TP-Link warns that this is not recommended because it can create an overload risk users may not notice: TP-Link smart plug FAQ. Check both the appliance and plug documentation if you are unsure whether a particular load is suitable.

Indoor and outdoor use are not interchangeable
Use a model specifically rated for outdoor placement if the plug will be exposed to outdoor conditions. TP-Link lists its TP25 outdoor plug as IP65-rated, with a maximum load of 15 A / 1800 W: TP-Link TP25 specifications. Those details apply to the TP25 only; check another model’s own environmental and electrical ratings before using it outside.
Features vary by model
Scheduling and energy monitoring are not guaranteed across all smart plugs. For example, TP-Link says energy monitoring is available on its Tapo P110 and P115, but not on the P100 and P105: TP-Link Tapo energy-monitoring FAQ. Check the exact model for the features you need rather than assuming they are included.

A quick checklist before choosing one
- Network: Confirm supported Wi-Fi bands and whether your home network meets the model’s requirements.
- Setup: Check which app, account, permissions, or pairing method the manufacturer requires.
- Smart-home support: Verify that the exact model supports your assistant or platform.
- Electrical limits: Compare the plug’s voltage, current, wattage, and any relevant motor-load limits with the appliance.
- Placement: Choose an indoor or outdoor-rated model that suits where it will be used, and check whether its size blocks a nearby outlet.
- Features: Confirm that scheduling, energy monitoring, or other desired functions are listed for that model.
If the plug will not connect
- Look up the exact model’s setup instructions and confirm which Wi-Fi band it supports.
- Follow that manufacturer’s app-based setup steps, including any required phone permissions or account sign-in.
- If setup still fails, use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance for the model. A router change is not a universal fix; the cause and remedy depend on the product and network.
