A Wi-Fi router creates the wireless network that lets devices in your home use your internet connection. It connects phones, computers, smart TVs, cameras, voice assistants, and other networked devices without requiring each one to have its own wired connection. The router provides the home network; it does not, by itself, provide internet service.

What a Wi-Fi router does

A wireless router sends a signal through your home that compatible devices can join to reach the internet. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes the router as the usual source of the wireless signal in a home Wi-Fi network. The exact equipment arrangement can vary by provider and household, but the router’s central role is to connect devices to the local network and route their internet traffic.

That network can serve many kinds of devices, including computers, phones, IP cameras, voice assistants, smart TVs, and connected appliances. Without Wi-Fi, devices may need a wired network connection or another way to get online.

Do you need a Wi-Fi router?

You need one if you want devices to connect to your home internet wirelessly. A router is especially useful when several household devices need network access, or when devices such as phones and smart appliances are not practical to connect with cables.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

If you only use a wired connection, you may not need Wi-Fi specifically. Whether you need a separate router depends on your internet-service setup; the sources cited here do not cover every modem, gateway, or provider configuration. Check with your internet provider if you are unsure which equipment your service requires.

What to check before choosing or keeping a router

  • Security encryption: Look for WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal. The FTC describes WPA3 as the newer option and WPA2 as an option that can also work.
  • Software updates: Confirm that the manufacturer or internet provider supplies a way to keep the router’s software current.
  • Guest network: A guest network lets visitors use Wi-Fi without receiving the password for your primary network, and can help keep a guest device’s malware away from your primary devices.
  • Fit for your setup: Consider the devices in your household and how they connect. The cited guidance does not establish model-specific speed or coverage performance, so it cannot support a particular router recommendation.

Secure your home Wi-Fi

Basic router settings can reduce avoidable risks, though no setting guarantees a secure network. The FTC recommends the following measures in its home Wi-Fi security guidance:

  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.

  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
  1. Choose WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal encryption.
  2. Change the router’s default administrative username and password, as well as the Wi-Fi network name. Use unique credentials that do not reveal personal information or the router brand.
  3. Keep the router’s software updated using the manufacturer’s or internet provider’s update process.
  4. Turn off remote management, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) if you do not need them.
  5. Set up a guest network if the router offers one, and check that its firewall is enabled.

When an older router may need replacing

Start by checking whether the router can be updated. Then look again at its available encryption settings. If WPA2 Personal and WPA3 Personal are still unavailable and the only choices are older WPA or WEP, the FTC advises considering a new router. This is a security-based reason to replace it; the available guidance does not set a universal replacement age or establish a speed or coverage threshold.
