A Wi-Fi QR code usually stores a structured text string beginning with WIFI:. For a reliable code, escape five reserved characters inside the network name or password, quote a literal SSID made only of hexadecimal characters, and choose error correction with its capacity tradeoff in mind. Level H adds redundancy, but it does not translate into a fixed increase in printed code size.
What information does a Wi-Fi QR code contain?
A common ZXing-style payload looks like WIFI:T:WPA;S:mynetwork;P:mypass;;. Its fields identify the authentication type (T), network name or SSID (S), and password (P). The final pair of semicolons closes the payload structure.

For example, WIFI:T:WPA;S:CafeGuest;P:example-pass;; describes a WPA network named CafeGuest. ZXing documents authentication values including WPA, WEP, WPA2-EAP, and nopass; support for payload options can vary by scanner and platform. Field order can also vary. An optional H:true indicates a hidden network.
These strings are a widely used convention, not a promise that every phone or QR reader handles every authentication type and optional field identically. ZXing documents the payload format in its Barcode Contents guide.

Which characters must be escaped?
Within the SSID and password values, prefix each of these five characters with a backslash: backslash, semicolon, comma, colon, and double quote. The comma is included in the documented escape set even though it is not used as a field separator.

Suppose a password is literally p@ss;word. Its semicolon must be escaped so it does not look like a field boundary: WIFI:T:WPA;S:CafeGuest;P:p@ss;word;;.

Escape literal backslashes first
When constructing the payload, escape existing backslashes before adding escape markers for the other four characters. If you add markers first and then escape every backslash, you may escape the new markers as well and change the intended value. The five-character set and escaping convention are described in UseQR’s QR-code troubleshooting guide and ZXing’s payload documentation.

A value made entirely of hexadecimal characters can be interpreted as hexadecimal data rather than as literal ASCII text by a reader following the ZXing convention. For a literal SSID such as ABCD, enclose the value in double quotes:

WIFI:T:WPA;S:"ABCD";P:example;;
Use this convention when the intended network name is text consisting only of hex digits, rather than a hexadecimal representation. ZXing also notes this quoting approach for passwords. Confirm how the encoder and scanner you plan to use handle quoting, then decode and inspect the finished QR code before sharing it.

QR error-correction levels trade data capacity for redundancy. ZXing’s documentation gives approximate recovery estimates of 7% for L, 15% for M, 25% for Q, and 30% for H. These are documentation estimates, not guarantees that a code will survive a particular kind or location of damage.

H therefore buys more error-correction redundancy, at the expense of how much data the symbol can carry. It does not impose a universal percentage increase in printed dimensions. Whether a particular Wi-Fi payload moves to a larger QR version depends on its length, encoding mode, and the generator’s choices. Compare generated codes only when the payload and other generator settings are held fixed; check the resulting QR version and rendered dimensions. ZXing describes its level estimates and capacity tradeoff in its chart-server parameters guide.

How to verify a Wi-Fi QR code before printing or sharing
- Build the payload. Confirm that the authentication type, SSID, password, and any hidden-network setting match the network and the payload convention your generator supports.
- Escape the values. In the SSID and password, escape backslashes first, then semicolons, commas, colons, and double quotes wherever they occur.
- Check hex-only text. If a literal SSID consists entirely of hexadecimal characters, use the quoted form where the ZXing convention applies.
- Choose error correction deliberately. Higher correction adds redundancy but reduces capacity; do not assume H will produce a particular print size.
- Decode and test the generated symbol. Inspect the decoded payload for the intended values and scan it with the devices or readers that matter for your use case before distributing it. A printable card or sign is optional; test the code before printing multiple copies.
