A weak Wi-Fi room does not automatically mean your internet plan is too slow. Distance, walls, interference, busy networks, device limits, or a weak connection between mesh points can all be responsible. First compare the room with a spot near the router, then try repositioning equipment before buying anything.
How to tell whether you have a Wi-Fi dead zone
Test the same device in the weak room and near the router. If performance improves substantially closer to the router, distance or obstructions are plausible causes. If every room is slow, a localized coverage gap is less likely; check the internet connection, network activity, and device capability before purchasing coverage hardware.

Wi-Fi performance can also vary with the connected device, frequency band, physical barriers, other Wi-Fi traffic, neighboring networks, and nearby sources of interference such as microwaves or baby monitors. Google lists these among factors that can affect performance in its slow-internet troubleshooting guidance.
If you already use mesh Wi-Fi
Use the system’s link or mesh test if one is available. Google’s mesh test measures the connection between the primary point and added points. A weak link between points can reduce reliability and become a speed bottleneck, even if the point is physically close to the room you want to cover. See Google’s mesh test guide.

Try these fixes before buying equipment
1. Move the router to a better location
When practical, place the router centrally in the home, in an open position, off the floor, and in plain view. A modem location or short cable may limit your choices, but even a modest move can help. Retest the weak room after each change so you can identify whether it made a difference. The FCC also advises central router placement in its consumer guidance on improving Wi-Fi coverage.
2. Reduce physical obstructions
Move the router or mesh point away from objects that block the signal where possible. Walls, furniture, and the layout of the home can affect coverage. In crowded buildings, neighboring Wi-Fi traffic may also contribute. There is no single channel or frequency-band setting that is a universal fix: results depend on distance, the device, barriers, and local interference.

- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
3. Reposition mesh points you already own
Place a mesh point partway between the main router and the weak area, in an open location where it can still maintain a strong connection to the main point. A point at the far edge of coverage may itself have a poor link. Google commonly advises keeping its Wifi devices within roughly two rooms of one another; treat that as Google-specific placement guidance, not a guaranteed distance for every home or product. Run the system’s mesh test, if available, and adjust placement based on the result. Google’s Wifi device placement guidance explains its recommendations.
Which coverage option fits your home?
The right choice depends on the size and location of the gap, the home’s construction and layout, the link quality between wireless points, and what your current equipment supports.

| Option | Best fit | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Router repositioning | A weak room may be affected by a router that is tucked away or poorly located. | Modem and cable location, nearby obstructions, and whether retesting improves the room. |
| Mesh Wi-Fi system | Several rooms or a broad area need additional coverage points. | Layout and construction, node placement and link quality, compatibility with the current router, and wired-backhaul support. |
| Range extender | A localized gap may be reachable from a spot that still receives a usable signal. | Compatibility, placement, and whether the existing mesh system supports third-party bridges. |
| Ethernet cable or wired access point | A cable route is practical and the equipment supports the intended wired setup. | Ports, route, network topology, and device documentation. |
Mesh for coverage across several areas
Mesh systems use connected points to spread coverage beyond what one router location can provide. They can suit homes with multiple weak areas, but adding points does not automatically fix a poor connection between them. Check the system’s supported product generations and node limits before expanding or mixing equipment. Compatibility rules are product-specific: Google, for example, says Nest Wifi Pro cannot be combined in a mesh network with certain earlier Google Wifi and Nest Wifi products. Google’s mesh-network overview describes how its systems work and notes compatibility limitations.
An extender for a smaller gap
The FCC identifies range extenders as one possible way to improve signal strength. An extender needs to receive a usable signal where it is installed, so putting it in the dead spot itself may not help. Confirm compatibility with your router or mesh equipment. Google cautions that third-party bridges used with its systems can have compatibility, device-list, feature, or roaming issues; those warnings are specific to Google’s products and should not be treated as a universal claim about all extenders. See Google’s guidance on using wireless extenders with Nest Wifi or Google Wifi.

A wired connection where cabling is feasible
If you can run Ethernet to a better location, a wired link may connect supported equipment or a device without relying on a wireless link between points. Check the ports and setup documentation for the specific router, access point, or mesh system before choosing this topology.
Why there is no guaranteed fix or coverage distance
A layout that works in one home may not work in another. Home size, building materials, room arrangement, router and device capabilities, interference, and the quality of the internet connection all affect the result. The cited guidance offers placement advice and product-specific examples, not a universal coverage guarantee or independent head-to-head benchmarks for mesh systems and extenders. Make the decision from your own test results and equipment’s compatibility instructions.
