Wi-Fi 7 focuses on high throughput, with features such as 320 MHz channels, 4K QAM and Multi-Link Operation. Wi-Fi 8’s proposed direction is different: more consistent performance when signals are weak, networks are crowded, or devices move between access points. A Wi-Fi 8 router alone will not deliver those benefits to older devices, and no draft feature list guarantees a faster home internet connection.
Where Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 8 stand
IEEE 802.11be-2024 is the standard known as Wi-Fi 7. Wi-Fi 8 is being developed as IEEE 802.11bn, under the name Ultra High Reliability (UHR). Qualcomm describes it as the next-generation wireless standard, but that is a vendor’s description of the initiative, not an official IEEE quotation. Qualcomm’s Wi-Fi 8 explainer outlines the intended distinction between the generations.

Wi-Fi 8 remains a draft project, so its features and schedule can change. The IEEE P802.11bn initial Working Group ballot on draft D2.0 closed on September 2, 2026, with 76.5% approval. The project timeline still lists predicted milestones through 2028; these are forecasts, not a guarantee of when a finished standard or retail products will arrive. See the IEEE 802.11 project timelines.
Qualcomm has said final IEEE approval is expected in 2028 and Wi-Fi Alliance certification is projected for January 2028. In a March 2026 announcement, it also said its Wi-Fi 8 platforms were sampling to customers and that commercial products were expected in late 2026. Chip or platform sampling is not the same as a certified consumer router being available in stores. Check the specific product’s status when buying. Qualcomm’s announcement describes its own platforms and expectations.

What changes between Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 8?
| Area | Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) | Wi-Fi 8 (802.11bn / UHR direction) |
|---|---|---|
| Design emphasis | Very high throughput and low latency | More consistent throughput, latency and connection behavior in difficult conditions |
| Features highlighted in vendor materials | Up to 320 MHz channel width, 4K QAM and Multi-Link Operation (MLO) | Enhanced Long Range, improved error correction, unequal modulation, multi-access-point coordination, roaming and handoff improvements, spectrum-use mechanisms, and in-device coexistence |
| Potentially visible use | High-capacity local links when compatible devices, available spectrum and router support align | Improved reliability or responsiveness at coverage edges, in dense networks, while roaming, or across multiple access points |
| Status caveat | A peak specification does not promise a particular internet speed | The standard is still in draft development; features and retail implementations may change |
These feature descriptions come from Qualcomm and Broadcom. They describe the design direction, not independent tests or a guarantee that every Wi-Fi 8 product will implement each proposed feature in the same way.
Wi-Fi 7: more capacity when conditions support it
Wi-Fi 7’s headline features are aimed at fast, high-capacity wireless links. A 320 MHz channel can provide a wider channel where the router, client and available spectrum support it. 4K QAM can carry more data per transmission under suitable signal conditions. MLO can use multiple links to improve throughput or connection behavior, depending on device support and network conditions. These capabilities do not translate directly into a matching increase in internet speed: the ISP connection, distance, interference, device capability and configuration all matter.

Wi-Fi 8: reliability under challenging conditions
Wi-Fi 8’s proposed features target situations in which a network may struggle to maintain a steady connection: weak or variable signals, many competing devices, movement between access points, and coordination across multiple access points. That emphasis could matter more to someone whose calls or games suffer from inconsistent latency than to someone chiefly seeking a higher best-case speed. These are intended benefits of a standard still under development, not confirmed performance results for consumer routers.
What you need to benefit from Wi-Fi 8
Both ends of a wireless connection matter. Replacing an access point does not make an existing phone, laptop or other client use Wi-Fi 8 features; the client needs compatible Wi-Fi 8 hardware too. Qualcomm describes Wi-Fi 8 as backward-compatible with Wi-Fi 7 and earlier Wi-Fi generations, so older devices are expected to remain usable, but they will connect according to their own capabilities.

Before choosing a generation, identify the problem you are trying to solve:
- Weak coverage: Determine whether the issue is a dead zone or poor signal at the edge of coverage. Router placement or adding access points may be more immediately relevant than a generation upgrade.
- Congestion: If performance drops when many devices are active, look at the number and placement of access points and the devices on the network. Wi-Fi 8’s proposed coordination features are aimed at difficult network conditions, but their real-world benefit remains to be established in retail products.
- Roaming: If connections falter as you move around a home with multiple access points, a suitable multi-access-point or mesh arrangement may matter. Wi-Fi 8’s proposed roaming improvements are not a reason to assume every router or mesh kit will behave identically.
- Inconsistent latency: If the problem is spikes or interruptions rather than low peak speed, Wi-Fi 8’s reliability emphasis may eventually be relevant. The available sources do not establish independent consumer-router benchmarks comparing Wi-Fi 7 with Wi-Fi 8.
- Slow internet: If the wireless link is not the bottleneck, a newer Wi-Fi generation may not improve the speed delivered by the ISP connection.
Should you buy Wi-Fi 7 now or wait for Wi-Fi 8?
If your router is failing or cannot meet a clear current need, Wi-Fi 7 is a relevant generation to consider now. Its case is stronger when your devices support Wi-Fi 7 and you can make practical use of its capabilities. If your current network works well, waiting for actual Wi-Fi 8 products and independent reviews is more sensible if you specifically want the anticipated improvements at range, in dense environments, or across multiple access points.

When comparing products, check the router’s supported features and the capabilities of the devices you use—not just the generation printed on the box. Also confirm actual availability and price at the time of purchase. A draft Wi-Fi 8 feature list, or a vendor announcement about sampled platforms, is not evidence that a particular consumer router is available or will deliver a particular household speed increase.
