Wi-Fi 7 can add more wireless capacity and newer connection features, but it will not automatically make every home device faster. The main changes from Wi-Fi 6 are support for 6 GHz, channels up to 320 MHz, 4096-QAM modulation and Multi-Link Operation (MLO). To use Wi-Fi 7 features, you need a compatible router and client device; your internet plan, signal conditions and local rules still affect what you experience.
What is the difference between Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7?
Wi-Fi 6 is based on 802.11ax; Wi-Fi 7 is based on 802.11be. Intel’s comparison lists Wi-Fi 6 on 2.4 and 5 GHz, and Wi-Fi 7 on 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz. Wi-Fi 6E is an important distinction: it brings 6 GHz support to Wi-Fi 6, but does not, by itself, add Wi-Fi 7’s 320 MHz channels or other Wi-Fi 7 capabilities. A device that supports 6 GHz is not necessarily a Wi-Fi 7 device.

| Feature | Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) | Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) | What it can mean at home |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bands in Intel’s comparison | 2.4 and 5 GHz | 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz | 6 GHz is also available with Wi-Fi 6E, where supported and enabled. |
| Maximum channel width in Intel’s comparison | 160 MHz | 320 MHz | Wider channels can provide greater peak capacity when both devices and available spectrum support them. |
| Modulation in Intel’s comparison | 1024-QAM | 4096-QAM | Higher modulation can carry more data per transmission under suitable link conditions. |
| Multi-Link Operation | Not listed as a Wi-Fi 6 feature in Intel’s Wi-Fi 7 overview | Supported capability | Can use multiple links; Intel describes potential throughput, latency and reliability benefits, but the cited material does not quantify typical household gains. |
These are capability comparisons, not promises of a particular speed in a particular room. Intel’s specifications are vendor information, not independent home performance testing. Intel’s Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 comparison lists the bands, channel widths and modulation figures.

What will feel different in everyday use?
More capacity where the connection can use it
A Wi-Fi 7 link can use wider channels and denser modulation than the Wi-Fi 6 comparison above. That can raise peak wireless capacity when the router and client both support those features and the signal conditions are suitable. It does not mean a Wi-Fi 7 phone, laptop or console will always download faster: a weak signal, interference, router limits or an internet connection slower than the wireless link can become the constraint.

Multi-Link Operation is not a guaranteed latency fix
MLO is a Wi-Fi 7 capability for transmitting data across multiple frequency bands or links. Intel says it can improve throughput, latency and reliability, but does not provide a quantified typical-home improvement for a particular router and client. Treat it as a feature that may help compatible equipment, not as a guarantee of lower ping or uninterrupted video in every home. Intel’s Wi-Fi 7 overview describes MLO and its intended benefits.
6 GHz is useful only when it is available and supported
Using 6 GHz depends on local regulations, compatible hardware, manufacturer enablement and the relevant drivers and operating system. Its availability should be checked for your location and devices rather than inferred from a router’s Wi-Fi generation. Wi-Fi 6E can also use 6 GHz, so this band alone is not a reason to label a device Wi-Fi 7.

Do you need to replace your router or devices?
To use Wi-Fi 7 functionality, both the router and the client device need to support Wi-Fi 7. A new Wi-Fi 7 router does not upgrade the wireless hardware in an older Wi-Fi 6 laptop, phone or TV; that client continues to use the capabilities it supports.

- List the devices that matter. Check the wireless standard supported by the phones, computers, consoles and other devices you expect to benefit.
- Check the router and client together. Confirm that both support the Wi-Fi 7 features you want, rather than relying on the router’s generation label alone.
- Check 6 GHz availability. Verify regional permission and manufacturer support for the particular devices, drivers and operating systems.
- Compare the rest of the connection. Consider your internet plan, signal strength in the rooms you use, obstacles and competing network traffic.
For Intel wireless products specifically, Intel’s support guidance says a Wi-Fi 7-compatible router and Windows 11 version 24H2 or later are required to enable Wi-Fi 7 functionality. That is Intel product guidance, not a universal operating-system requirement for every vendor’s devices. Intel also notes that 6 GHz availability depends on regional and product conditions. Intel’s Wi-Fi 7 and 6 GHz support guidance covers those product-specific requirements.

How should you interpret Wi-Fi 7 speed claims?
Intel gives a theoretical maximum of 5.76 Gbps for a specified 2×2 Wi-Fi 7 client that supports 320 MHz channels, 4096-QAM and MLO. It estimates a maximum of 5.19 Gbps over the air using an assumed 90% efficiency. Those figures describe a conditional theoretical configuration and an estimate based on an assumption—not measured room-by-room household speeds, a promised ISP speed or a typical result. Intel’s Wi-Fi 7 overview provides the figures and qualifications.
Real-world wireless speed also depends on the bandwidth supplied by your ISP, the equipment on the connection, network congestion and physical interference such as walls. Intel identifies these factors in its discussion of Wi-Fi 7 gaming performance; it does not establish a fixed percentage gain for every home. Intel’s Wi-Fi 7 gaming article discusses those influences.

When does Wi-Fi 7 make sense?
- You have Wi-Fi 7 clients, or plan to add them: A compatible router gives those devices a path to use Wi-Fi 7 features, subject to local availability and conditions.
- You need more local wireless capacity: The wider channels and MLO may be relevant in a compatible setup, but the improvement depends on the devices and environment.
- Your current network is already adequate and your devices are Wi-Fi 6: Replacing only the router will not give those clients Wi-Fi 7 capabilities. The upgrade’s benefit may be limited until compatible clients are added.
- Your internet plan is the bottleneck: A faster wireless link does not raise the speed delivered by a slower ISP connection, though Wi-Fi and local-network use are not limited to internet downloads.
