Wi-Fi 7 Router Buying Guide: Tri-Band, MLO, and 2.5GbE Explained

Choose a Wi-Fi 7 router by matching its bands, MLO support, Ethernet ports, and coverage plan to your devices and home—not its biggest advertised speed number.

Choose a Wi-Fi 7 router by checking your devices, wired connections, and home layout—not by picking the biggest advertised speed number. Confirm whether the clients you care about support 6 GHz and Wi-Fi 7 Multi-Link Operation (MLO), make sure the router’s WAN and LAN ports fit your broadband and wired gear, and decide whether one router can cover the rooms you use.

What do tri-band, MLO, and 2.5GbE mean?

Tri-band means three radio bands

A tri-band router offers 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz radios. That gives compatible devices more band options; it does not mean every device can connect on every band or that internet access will be faster for every user. Many older devices use 2.4 or 5 GHz. Check the exact client model for 6 GHz support, and remember that availability of 6 GHz varies by region. Dual-band and tri-band describe the number of bands, not whether a router supports MLO.

MLO coordinates multiple Wi-Fi links

Multi-Link Operation is a Wi-Fi 7 capability that lets compatible routers and clients use or manage multiple links. The Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) describes aggregation as a way to increase throughput and link switching as a way to avoid interference or delay in its 2023 Wi-Fi 7 overview. The benefit depends on both endpoints, their hardware and firmware, and the MLO modes they support. The label alone does not tell you which bands or links a device uses, or whether it transmits over several radios simultaneously.

2.5GbE is a wired Ethernet port speed

A 2.5GbE port supports an Ethernet link rated at 2.5 gigabits per second. It can remove the 1 Gbps port ceiling when your broadband service or a wired device can exceed gigabit speeds, but the entire connection must support the higher rate. Check whether a faster port is WAN, LAN, or configurable: a 2.5GbE WAN port helps only if it connects to a sufficiently fast service or modem, while a 2.5GbE LAN port can serve a compatible wired device.

What does Wi-Fi 7 promise—and what does it not?

Wi-Fi 7 is based on IEEE 802.11be. The WBA’s 2023 overview identifies channel widths of up to 320 MHz as a Wi-Fi 7 capability. That is a standard capability ceiling, not a speed a home device is guaranteed to receive. The WBA also described Wi-Fi 7 as “over three times faster than Wi-Fi 6,” attributing the comparison to wider channels and 4K-QAM. Treat that as a capability comparison in the WBA’s report announcement, not a measured result for a particular router or a promise about household internet speed: WBA Wi-Fi 7 overview.

Advertised wireless totals combine radio capabilities; they are not a single client’s guaranteed speed, an internet plan speed, or proof that every room will have strong coverage. Actual results depend on the router, client, configuration, interference, broadband connection, and distance.

Do your devices support Wi-Fi 7, 6 GHz, and MLO?

Start with the exact model of each device that matters most—such as a work laptop, phone, or desktop adapter—rather than assuming support from its age or brand. TP-Link’s 6 GHz Wi-Fi support FAQ explains how to check client support. For MLO, both the router and client need Wi-Fi 7 support, and the specific implementation and supported modes still matter; see TP-Link’s Wi-Fi 7 and MLO explainer.

  • Client supports Wi-Fi 7 and MLO: It may use the router’s supported MLO modes, subject to the capabilities and firmware of both devices.
  • Client supports 6 GHz but not Wi-Fi 7: It can use 6 GHz if its hardware and local rules allow it, but it will not gain Wi-Fi 7 features such as MLO.
  • Older client supports only 2.4 or 5 GHz: It can generally continue connecting to a Wi-Fi 7 router on a compatible band, but it will not use Wi-Fi 7 client features.

Do not infer MLO behavior from a feature name alone. RTINGS reported testing 25 Wi-Fi 7 routers and finding material differences in how they implemented MLO; 22 of its tested routers used what the review called the “most minimal form.” That is a finding about RTINGS’ tested sample and methodology, not a census of all routers currently sold, and firmware changes can make results date quickly. Consult its Wi-Fi 7 MLO testing and explanation for the details.

How should you compare Wi-Fi 7 routers?

Compare models in the order that determines whether their features will help in your home:

  1. Client fit: List the devices you expect to benefit. Check exact-model support for Wi-Fi 7, MLO, and 6 GHz rather than assuming all three together.
  2. Radio configuration: Compare dual-band and tri-band models, then verify the bands and features of the regional model you would buy. A third band is an option, not a speed guarantee.
  3. MLO details: Look for the supported modes, compatible clients, firmware information, and credible independent testing. The acronym by itself does not establish simultaneous multi-radio operation or a particular real-world gain.
  4. Wired path: Match WAN speed to your broadband service and modem, and LAN port speeds and count to your wired devices. Check which ports are assignable to WAN or LAN.
  5. Coverage plan: Consider router placement and the rooms where you need a reliable connection. If a single router cannot reach them, investigate mesh nodes or wired backhaul; a generic coverage claim cannot predict results in every floor plan.
  6. Regional details and availability: Verify the exact regional model, local 6 GHz rules, and current price and stock where you live. Prices and availability are not established here.

How to read a router’s speed and port specifications

TP-Link’s US product page calls the Archer BE9700 a 9.7 Gbps tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router and says its MLO works with Wi-Fi 7 clients. It lists one 10 Gbps WAN/LAN port, one 2.5 Gbps WAN/LAN port, and three 2.5 Gbps LAN ports. These are vendor-published specifications and an advertised aggregate wireless rate, not a measured throughput result or an independent recommendation. The example shows why it is worth checking port roles as well as their speed: TP-Link Archer BE9700 specifications.

When is mesh worth considering?

Coverage depends on the home’s layout, construction, router placement, and the rooms where you need service. If one router does not reach important spaces, compare a mesh setup or wired access points and consider whether wired backhaul is practical. The available specifications do not establish a universal winner between one router and mesh; choose based on the coverage your home needs rather than a generic coverage promise.
