Wave 2 Wi-Fi is a later grouping of features for 802.11ac, also called Wi-Fi 5. It is commonly associated with downlink MU-MIMO and 160 MHz channel support, alongside capabilities such as four spatial streams and extended 5 GHz channel support. The label is a useful starting point when checking a router or access point, but it does not prove that every device includes every feature or promise a particular internet speed.
What does “Wave 2” mean?
Wi-Fi Alliance launched its initial Wi-Fi CERTIFIED ac program in 2013. On June 28, 2016, the Alliance announced an expanded certification program that included Wave 2 features. Qualcomm’s contemporaneous account described MU-MIMO as one of those additions. “Wave 2” therefore refers to a later phase of 802.11ac product and certification capabilities—not a separate Wi-Fi generation. The underlying technology is Wi-Fi 5. Qualcomm’s 2016 account

The phrase is best treated as a shorthand for a group of capabilities, not as a guarantee that a product supports every item associated with that group. For example, a Wi-Fi Alliance certificate described the Extreme Networks AP-7612 as an “802.11ac Wave 2 Multi-User MIMO Access Point.” That illustrates the terminology in use; it is not a current consumer product recommendation. Which features are associated with Wave 2?
| Capability | How it relates to Wave 2 | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Downlink MU-MIMO | Commonly associated with Wave 2; it can let an access point transmit to multiple compatible clients simultaneously when conditions permit. | Check that the exact router or access point and the client devices support it. MU-MIMO also appears in later Wi-Fi generations, so it does not identify a device as Wave 2 by itself. Wi-Fi Alliance certificate record Wi-Fi Alliance Wi-Fi 6 access point certificate search |
| 160 MHz channels | Commonly associated with Wave 2. Intel distinguishes Wave 1’s 80 MHz channel support from Wave 2’s 160 MHz support. | Look for the channel widths explicitly listed in the product specifications; do not infer support from an AC label alone. Intel support reference |
| Four spatial streams | Listed among Wave 2 features in Qualcomm’s overview. | Check the specifications for the exact model; a Wave 2 label alone does not establish a particular device’s stream count. Qualcomm Wi-Fi overview |
| Extended 5 GHz channel support | Also listed among Wave 2 features in Qualcomm’s overview. The Wave 2 equipment discussed in these references is associated with 5 GHz. | Check the device’s listed bands and channel support. Qualcomm Wi-Fi overview |
How is Wave 2 different from Wave 1?
The clearest distinction in the cited technical references is channel width: Intel associates Wave 1 with support for 80 MHz channels and Wave 2 with support for 160 MHz channels. Wave 2 is also associated with MU-MIMO. These are feature-grouping distinctions, not a guarantee that every Wave 2 product implements every capability. Intel support reference Qualcomm’s 2016 account

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Both labels refer to 802.11ac, or Wi-Fi 5. Wave 2 is not the name of a newer Wi-Fi generation, and MU-MIMO alone is not enough to classify a device because the feature is also found in later Wi-Fi generations. Wi-Fi Alliance Wi-Fi 6 access point certificate search
Does Wave 2 Wi-Fi make your internet faster?
Not automatically. A wider channel can raise potential link capacity, and downlink MU-MIMO can help an access point serve multiple compatible clients at the same time under suitable conditions. Neither capability translates into a guaranteed speed increase for an individual home. Performance depends on the router, client support, configuration, radio conditions, and the internet connection. The cited sources do not establish a universal real-world speed gain.

- OneMesh Compatible Router - Form a seamless WiFi when work with TP-Link OneMesh WiFi Extenders
- Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 Technology – The Archer AX10 leverages advanced Wi-Fi 6 features like OFDMA and 1024-QAM to deliver improved efficiency across your entire network. Perfect for high-bandwidth activities like streaming, gaming, and smart home connectivity.
- Next-gen Dual Band router - 300 Mbps on 2. 4 GHz (802. 11n) plus 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz (802. 11ax)
- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
A peak or theoretical radio rate is not the same as the speed a person will see on an internet speed test. A Wave 2 router may offer useful capabilities, but the label alone does not say how fast a specific connection will be.

- Find the exact model number. Use the manufacturer’s technical specifications or a certification record for that model rather than relying on a family name or an “AC” label.
- Check the feature claims. Look for an explicit 802.11ac Wave 2 designation and verify details such as MU-MIMO and 160 MHz channel support separately.
- Check bands and streams. Confirm the listed frequency bands, channel widths, and spatial-stream capability; do not assume they all follow from the Wave 2 wording.
- Check the client devices too. A phone, computer, or other client must support the relevant features for the connection to use them.
For a router comparison, these model-specific details are more informative than the Wave 2 label on its own. Qualcomm also describes Wave 2 radio technology for premium routers and other home-network products, but that overview does not establish the feature set of every device that uses it.
